Wagner’s Universe in a Pianist’s Hands

One of the most thrilling performances offered at Cremona Musica this year was the Wagner by Liszt recital given by Filippo Tenisci – Italian pianist, born 1998 and celebrated for his refined interpretations and expressive mastery of the Romantic repertoire. After his recital we got the chance talking to Tenici about his Wagner/Liszt project. Read more

I'm working on a beethoven bagatelle, op. 119 #1. So I downloaded a recording. I noticed that the pianist didn't repeat the measures where there were repeat signs, here is the recording https://server3.pianosociety.com/protected/beethoven-119-1-morin-paul.mp3

Greetings.

Yeah, sometimes they don't pay attention to the repeats. I have a recording of Mozart's music that is arranged by Keith Snell, performed by Diane Hidy. The last piece, the Alla Turca, she ignores practically all of the repeats, except for the coda. I have played the piece and personally think that without repeats it just doesn't sound good enough. However since this was an educational CD I don't think the penalty should be too high.

I didn't realize it was a matter of preference, or is it. Otherwise that's a pretty obvious thing to miss no?

The Music Police remind you that there is a $100 fine for all Repeat Violations. Obey the instructions of the Masters. Repeat on all bars with double dots.

Music is music, even if it is shorter than normal. One of the best parts about music is when you get to the end of the song (or sections or whatever), you can basically do whatever you want.

Music is an art. If making repeats is ugly to you, then don't make them. Some pieces just kind of need the repeats just for the sake of music and form, making the music more stately. I can see the repeats in Mozart's "Ah, vous direz je maman" variations can seem unnecessary. That's just me though.
