Chopin's Mazurka 48: sixths in the right hand.
on: August 07, 2006, 12:42:59 AM
 Hi there!
I've been studying the Mazurka opus 68 # 3, and start wondering about the main cell, which consists basically of sixths. It is repeated in sequence, and (despite the harmonic changes) the articulation remains the same. So, I'm thinking about the possibilites of fingering for this part, and I am very interested in how do you, boys and girls, play this section.
 Thanks and best wishes!
PS: the file attached is not the whole work, just the part in question.

i don't know why, but that fingering looks awkward to me.  i have smaller hands, so i often change things like this to suit my hand.  the paganini variations has some sixth passages (granted they are different notes) and i used my fourth finger some (52, 41).

you know what i do is go to the nearest music library and see if there are some other fingerings to compare with.  copy the ones you like or leave it open as to which you will choose (writing several fingerings in).  then go home and try them.

 Dear Pianistimo:
Thanks for your answer and advice. Indeed, I put this post because I tried a lot of different fingerings and think of at least three of them as useful. So I saw that's could be of great help the ideas of the fellows here on the forum.
Thanks, and have a nice week!

in the second measure - i'd be most tempted to use 51, 41 ,31   in the sixth - 41, 52, 41  or something like that.

Yeap! In the second measure I tried this, them prefered something quite ordinary (14 25 14 or 15 25 14). I think that this fingering you told is very good, although I'm quite unsatisfied with the articulation of the lower voice (this "all thumb" is getting stacatto).
About the sixth measure, that's the best way.
