Piano competitions
on: August 09, 2006, 05:37:00 AM
Since I notice a lot of talk about competitions on this forum, I was wondering if anyone could suggest to me some competitions to try out for.  I know there are a ton out there and I suppose I could do a search online, but I thought I'd try here first.  I'll give a bit of background so that suggestions may be easier.  I played in my early childhood years, then took it up again my senior year of HS, went to college for a Music Ed degree studying piano, I teach public school music now, and practice like crazy.  Solo pieces I've learned include:  3 sonatas of Mozart, a beethoven sonata, haydn sonata, bach P & Fs, Chopin ballades 1, 3, 4, several nocturnes, 10 preludes, polonaises, scherzo 1, liszt mephisto waltz, eb concerto, prokofiev visions fugitives, learning tocatta, ravel sonatine, part of jeux d'eau, some scriabin preludes.  I could probably go on, that's all i can think of right now. Most of these I can still play with a little dusting first.

So basically, I'm asking if anyone knows of competitions that I might be able to compete in with this type of repertoire and experience.  I'm not looking for a Chopin International or Van Cliburn...not good enough for that (yet)!  But I do have a pretty solid technique and musical sense.  Also, I live in upstate NY, about 5 hours from NYC, so something close to this area, let's say the east coast, would be better.  Thanks in advance, I enjoy reading the conversations on here!

Here's a competition for amateI guess you probably qualify since you're a teacher and not a performer. https://www.phredpianoexpression.com/Competition.htm

I know a guy who submitted an audition tape to a competition, and he won one of the awards, so will be playing at Carnegie thanks to this.  I'm not sure exactly what the competition was though.   :-\

Find out if any orchestras in your area hold concerto competitions.  Lots of them do and if you win you get to play your piece with them in a concert.  I think some have required concertos they want people to play but a lot of the time you can just play whatever you have I think.
