Complimenting Piece for Shostakovitch
on: August 10, 2006, 05:46:16 PM
I am in the process of selecting my music for an upcoming piano competition and I need a second piece that will compliment my first (Three Fantastic Dances Op. 1 by Shostakovitch).  However, they need to be of different time periods.  So, if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Perhaps "Three Extremely Boring dances" by someone no one has heard of?

Those pieces are fascinating, the third is very showy!  I'd immediately recommend a more smooth, less 'harsh' sounding piece.  Each dance is short, around 1-2 minutes eh?  So I'm guessing this piece is around 5 minutes?  I'm leaning towards a romantic piece; maybe a Chopin nocturne would compliment this nicely, there's a ton at this level.  Also, check out Brahms' Intermezzos, and possibly his Rhapsody in G minor which has a beautiful middle section.  Liszt's Liebestraum, the famous one, is also right at the level of these dances, and would also compliment these nicely.  Also, take a look at some of Bach's P/Fs...hmmmmmmmmmmmmm also some of Grieg's lyric pieces are aweome, like Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, which has some virtuosic moments, yet is extremely beautiful.

& to continue with Grieg, I would suggest his "Kobold (Puck)"
Also, you might want to check out some Mendelssohn (Sw/oW check out Passion, Fleecy Clouds, and Spring Breezes)

Then again, I'm just saying this based on the idea that your Shosty is extremely fast and dissonant.

How about some Schubert? I always think Shostakovich and Schubert make an interesting (and alliterative) coupling. You could do one of the Moments Musicaux. No. 2 in A-flat is gorgeous.

Thank you for your advice.  I looked into all of your suggestions but I ended up with a nice sonata by Clementi.
