Busoni

I just listened to Fantasia Contrappuntistica and love it, especially the final fugue and stretta.

Anyone else like his works? What else should I listen to?

the bach transcriptions are among his best piecs, especially the popular chaconne in d minor. also, his massive piano concerto in c major is a piece that no one should miss. also, his variations on chopin's 20th prelude are another one of my favorite pieces, especially under john ogdon's fingers.

Is that scored for 2 pianos?

Fantasia Contrappuntistica exists in several versions by the composer and in arrangements by others; Busoni's solo piano version entitled (by him) "edizione definitivá" is the finest of all.

I just noticed that Madge has recorded the mentioned Fantasia. Is it worth getting or does he not follow the score a la Opus Clav?

i havent listened to my copy of it yet. i felt that i didnt need to after hearing o'riley do a good job with it. i will listen to madge's tomorrow. actually, for madge's otehr busoni recoordings, he doesnt screw them up as badly as he did with opus clav.

John Ogdon's Altarus CD of Busoni is the one to get. It contains the Fantasia Contrapuntistica, Fantasy After Bach, and the Toccata.

Indeed - go for it! And, while you're about it (whoever "you" may be - i.e. amyone interested), don't forget that this is one of two CDs of John Ogdon playing Busoni on Altarus that has not long been released - the catalogue numbers are AIR-CD-9070 and AIR-CD-9074.

Piano Street Magazine:
Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
