pain in my hand
on: January 05, 2004, 03:20:18 PM
Hi,
Since a few weeks I have much pain my hand (left). It's painful when I press at my hand (inside). Maybe I have a tendon inflammation...
Does anyone know this sort of pain?   :'(

meiting was talking about it not so long ago- from what he said it sounds like tendonitis but talk to him- he'll know a lot more than i do
What it all comes down to is that one does not play the piano with one’s fingers; one plays the piano with one’s mind.-  Glenn Gould

lol man... there's this thing called a "doctor" and they ripp you off... but if you're serious about your playing, go ahead and see one... maybe it's a she... and if you're really lucky, it will be a qute "she" :)))
Stop playing if it hurts, man... you will only make it worse and create wrong moves to avoid pain that your hand will continue to make even after you will get over it!

I sometimes have weird muscle pain when I practise, but it goes off as I practise more. I usually ignore it because it seems that it's nothing too serious.

Pains like that usualy occur if you stiff up during playing. If you play stiff and practice the same way for many hours you could damage muscles.

Hey u kno what? I have somethin exactly like that but in my right hand. There is a tightness in the palm and I can't straighten my middle finger (there's nothing wrong with the bone, it just won't stretch out properly and I've never broken it or anything). There is also a sort of fluidy sac under the skin that makes a bump right in the middle of my palm. It doesn't hurt when I practise except if I try to do a big stretch between my thumb and third finger.
My dad is a doctor and he thinks it may be a ganglion, which is a sac of fluid due to prolonged tension in the hand.
It is not the human monster that I fear- it is the human donkey.

The best way to play/practice is to minimize tension in your hands. Between long stretches try to close your hand to realease the tension. Also, never play with stiff arms. While playing, let your hands be somewhat "floppy"

Don't everybody's hands feel at least a little sore after playing lots of wide - ranging forte-fortissimo chords?

I have a similar problem at my left hand (the little finger)
and I got this pain by playing the op.25 No 12 Etude Chopin.I believe a small part of the pain is because of practising in the silent piano of Yamaha (wich I play at the impropriety hours). The sound is coming out before you press comletely all the note with result to tyrannize over the hand to play the right sound and this is very very harmfull for your hand. Now I'm playing in the other piano wich I have (for improperty hours using silancie)  but the pain resists. :(

I have hurt both hands from playing large chords.  I know when I did this and on what piece.  I wish I had never seen it. I know another piano teacher did this and has had an operation which has stopped the pain but she can no longer stretch an octave.  It is so frustrating when you have a passion to play and cant.I am going to a specialist to see if there is anything that can be done.  Sorry I can't help, but look with interest if any one else has had this problem

What piece was it? I'm scared.

I have noticed that left hand little finger pain in the Chopin op.25#12, but it never gets really bad. I think one just has to know when to stop working on a piece for the day and work on other repertoire for a few hours.

I suggest that you go get medical help right away.  If you ignore this, you could develop tendonitis.  But for now, ice your hand as much as possible and stop playing when your hand hurts.

Me or Kerry? My pain is never very serious, it is more like a slight soreness or stiffness. I think it comes from having to accent the base note with the little finger.

Yeah I have exactly the same feeling and the pain is at the articulation (at the globural -round-bone of finger and on the top of the hand).
Have you ever heard an ointment Voltaren ?Relieves the pain but temporary. After 2-3 hours the same pain.
