Tuning Standard
on: August 17, 2006, 05:19:56 AM
Hello,

I'm curious if anyone has experimented with having their piano tuned to any of the many standards (from A427 to A450 or so) that have been used in the past and present. I saw in another thread that someone said that A445 is more concert pitch and is more exciting, but for their home prefers A440 because it's not so overpowering in a small room.

Thanks! -Zach

Not true. The human ear detects pitches in 8Hz increments, so A440 sounds the same as A445.

Concert standard is A440 in nearly all performances, anyway.
Fortune favours the musical.

Waldszennen,
Where did you take your information.  Since Hz is a log scale, it does not make sence that the human ear only perceive difference in pitch by 8 Hz steps.  For exemple, if A0 is 27,5 Hz and A1 is 55 Hz one can easily see that the human ear will perceive a pitch difference with much smaller steps than 8 Hz.
Regards
Martin

Yea, the 8 Hz difference bit I've never heard before, and as mfortin says, it doesn't make sense. Maybe a human ear can easily detect 8hz differences, like people with perfect pitch will know that difference and say that's an A not a Bb? I do know I've listened to samples online of the 440 vs 445 tunings and noticed the difference.

I believe he meant to say 8 cents not Hz.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
