Jay Greenberg's first CD on Sony BMG released
on: August 24, 2006, 02:06:10 AM
It came out last week. I've only heard excerpts. It has his 5th symphony, which was composed when he was 12.

This CD has gotten a lot of notice on sequenza21.com, a website for contemporary classical composers. Well that is what they call themselves; though they tend to spend more time bashing classical music in the forums than one would think appropriate for a "classical composer" (how often in the pianoforum do you see someone posting about how ridiculous it is to play the piano?).
The intellectual atmosphere over there tends to be along the lines of rejecting the canonical on the idea that it is based more on the tastes and institutions of the elite than actual quality. Anything or anyone that receives a lot of attention, is therefore suspect.
The responses it got ranged from the interesting anecdote to the sublimely ridiculous. One fellow actually wrote, "I must show my hand and say that, listening to the Amazon snippets, it struck me that the music was extremely well-done for a 15-year-old, but not much else."
How much
can you hear on Amazon.com "snippets?!"
Well it makes for some entertaining reading, if you can make it over there.
