help with finding music for production
on: August 25, 2006, 01:19:22 AM
I am a piano teacher, but also do general music teaching in school, and we are looking at putting on a musical production this year.  I've managed to get the script (Lion King) but need to get hands on the music as well....any suggestions?  Thanx

Usually when you rent the rights to a musical for such a school production they would include the music as well.  Unless you picked up a non-music version??

You may want to check with MTI if they have it:

Failing that you could check gamingforce for a "preview" of some music if it is there.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Thanks for the link, although they didn't have what I needed.  Yes I did happen to pick up a non-music version...I do have most of the music but not a full score.  Thanks again.

I don't believe the Lion King is available for licensing for amatuer productions at this time.

That's what I gathered, as I've tried many different outlets already.  Guess we'll have to do it the hard way and underscore everything!!!  Thanks.

Maybe try searching out some good quality MIDI's.  They may have usable orchestrations.

You do realize this material is protected and performing in public any or all parts without permission (even for free) is illegal.

Yes, I hear Disney is very picky about how its stuff can be performed.

Checkout Broadway Junior.

Thanks for the advice and the warnings   :o will look into more details.  Not about to do it right away, just and idea that the administratives are tossing with at the mo.  Cheers.

How did this end up?  (Are you still using this site?)

I was wondering if it's possible to do a 'concert' version of something like Lion King and have the kids sing all the songs onstage -- All onstage singing, not stated.

If you are stuck on doing "The Lion King," you could always consider singing the choral medley that is available. It isn't exactly the same as a stage show, but this is the closest you will get to performing "The Lion King" until the show becomes available to license.

It could be fun to do if the kids dressed up in costumes. You could even coordinate some movement into the medley.

If this medley doesn't fit your needs, there are other show medleys available.

Is Jungle Book close enough?  My daughter just did that with one of those Missoula Children's Theatre productions.  They send a team out to set up, rehearse, and direct a play over an intense week.  They bring the music and hire a local player.

I've played in the pit for the last four local musicals but renting the full score and having the performance rights is part of the production.  Trying to do it without paying is, frankly, out and out theft.

Thanks 4 all ur feedbacks...Yes..I'm still around on the forum, Bob, but have been away for some time.  The school will probably wait a while until rights are available, although we will be doing a simplified adaptation using just a few of the songs.  Thanks for all your repliles.
