It's a shame really . Not only I have to dodge dog's excrement but I also have to dodge spit. One can't walk safely on the street.

Ha, I think it's illegal in Singapore to spit on the streets.  I think it's a kinda disgusting habit myself but I'm not worried about picking up diseases cause I don't clean my shoes with my tongue...  :P

Actually spitting on the streets is illegal presently in the way jaywalking is (i.e.,you won't get busted for it even if a cop sees you do it; it's not enforced) but it used to be a greater offense because it was a major health hazard as TB germs become airborne in the dried spittle and  occasionaly caused mass outbreaks via this route back when TB was less well controlled and that's how it became a "criminal offense" (i.e., in the US anyway).

And, it really is pretty gross. :-X
Generally speaking, people suck.

 I think it is repugnant.
I believe that Peter the Great (the Russian Czar) really hated it, creating a law banning that- since Russians had this habit.

Whats a wog?

Racial slang for a migrant of south European, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern descent (in Australia, that is).

A "wog" in Britain refers to a Sri Lankan, I believe (though I'm probably wrong).

I suppose it's OK to use racial slang.. if thats the way you think.  I'm glad I dont think that way.

I'd rather spit on your street.

I spit on the street when there's pretty much no one around... where I am, you look like an a$$ if you spit on the street where tons of ppl are walking.

in physics, one learns that if you spit forward whilst already having speed (on the bike), then the speed of your spit would be equal to the speed of the bike + the speed with which you released it from your mouth.

unless your friend installed nitrous boost on your bike, the phenomena you stated is impossible.  ;D

this applies on any object with speed. if you are, say, riding on the top of an aeroplane travelling at a few hundred metres per second, and then you jump straight up, you will actually travel the same horizontal distance as the plane. This means that when you land, you will still be on the plane (at roughly the same position as when you first jmped up)

and i think spitting on the street is bad  :)

it's possible.
the question is one of air resistance.  At which speed will speed of spit < speed of bike?
This means that

air resistance  > (speed of spit with which it was released - bike speed)

in order for it to land back in the person's face.  And not only that, but the spit must have a small mass in order to hit him in the face and not in the stomach or groin area.  no nitrous boost is required if the spit is light enough.  and of course it will happen all the more easily with a wind in your face..

and I know it's possible; it happened to me

mass has nothing to do with how fast it will fall to the ground, only the surface area and shape of spit does. now, since a spit has almost 0 surface area, as well as having a spherical shape, air resistance would have negligible effect on it. for comparison, you and your bike would experience a much greater air resistance than the spit.

how can spitting on the streets spread diseases?

If the water droplets in the air suddenly made their way into someone's breathing, I suppose it can...

But I can't think of a disease so potent it's present in saliva and can spread through miniscule water droplets. ^_^

In the library, some people put their feet up on another chair, some sit with their feet on the sofa they're sitting on, some pick their noses, some dig their ears, some pull stubble with tweezers. No kidding.

Thats where you're wrong. Many viruses can be passed by spit. For example, the SARS virus in 2003, and even flu can be passed by spit(thats what my sources claim).

You haven't been drafted into the army have you?  Somehow I do mind people spitting except when I was in the army when it seemed like a natural thing to do.  I can't really explain it. :)

Hmm, isn't spit made of water and solid particles? (maybe I'm wrong, but if I'm right,) when the water evaporates into water vapour, only the water evaporates, leaving the solid particles glued to the ground to wait for some dumb mutt to lick it up.

I heard that this is often done in China(well, China is big) and South-Korea.

Also, soccer players do it all the time. All of them.

Spitting is an example of stupid pointless human behavior. And how all humans copy each other for no reason at all.

Isn't it therefore a prime example of getting past our "selfish genes"?  :P  I spit to prove that i have evolved.  gurgles -- *pewh*

BTW Have you not read dune?  I think that book singly changed my opinion of spitting.
