Sergie Lyapunov
on: August 30, 2006, 11:17:20 PM
Why does nobody play music by Lyapunov? I've been listening to the few recordings that I can find and they are incredible, especially the 12 transcendental studies. When I mentioned him to my teacher (who may well be the most well known pianist in Australia (not that that says much!)) he had never even heard of him.
Any thoughts?

perhaps it is because he takes so many pages from liszt. people probably thinks that he only copies works. afterall, his 12 transcendental etudes is modeled after liszt. also, his 2nd piano concerto in e major is almost an exact replica (structurally) of liszt's 2nd piano concerto. however, i do see some uniqueness in his works and have grown to love them. once people get past the notion that he only copied liszt, they may learn to like him as well.

btw, who is your teacher? what is his name?

Does anyone have a recording of any of these I may have?

What I hear is that #s 10&12 are amazing.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Kentner's (the earlier recording) is the benchmark, for me.

Koji, I would be very interested to hear what you make of the etudes. Which ones are you playing? I have had a serious but iffy look at no.12 (the Elegy for Liszt) and a dabble with some of the others.

I'm of the opinion that there is much of interest hidden in his music even if some of his music is clearly derived from other sources (Lesghinka from Islamey, Ronde des sylphes (heh, my screen name) from Feux Follets, etc). I rather like the first piano concerto, amongst other works.

For what it's worth, Liapounov recorded four rolls for Welte-Mignon in February 1910, when the Welte recording piano was taken over to Russia. They are:

1975    Etude d'Exécution Transcendante, Op 11/12, Elégie en mémoire de François Liszt

1976    Etude d'Exécution Transcendante, Op 11/5, Nuit d'été

1977    Etude d'Exécution Transcendante, Op 11/1, Berceuse

1978    Divertissement - Chansonette Enfantine, Op 35

Here he is, recording them:
