Website on fugal structure?
on: September 03, 2006, 12:57:01 AM
I am beginning an exercise in writing contrapuntally. I know some basic stuff about fugues, and have listened to the WTC, as well as Romantic fugues by the likes of Mendelssohn, Scriabin, Glazunov, and Chopin. Now, I need to know some more information while I begin writing my own fugues.

In short, I'm at a lack of info on how to write a fugue successfully.

Does anyone know of a website that supplies this kind of information?

www.kunstderfuge.com/theory.htm

also, there's a young composers forum at:
www.youngcomposers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4312  where a guy takes the 'twinkle, twinkle' variations and turns the motive into a motive for fugue.  not sure if there are verbal as well as musical examples.

i found a new book at amazon, too:
'the technique and spirit of fugue:  an historical study by george oldroyd

(not sure of the reviews - but you can read them to see if people liked the book)

also, take a look here:

(under analysis of fugue)
www.kunstderfuge.com/theory/bwv861.html

(click on 'english' - and wait.  it will give you a sort of power-point show on bach's fugue)

you're welcome!  it's been awhile since i've sat down and figured out the ones already written.  writing your own must be a challenge.

Yeah, very much so.

Writing contrapuntally is, for me, just as hard as playing contrapuntally. The fugue is the worst of the contrapuntal structures to write, because it's the hardest single form to write in, period.

Of course, I've tried to write in sonata, rondo, and variation form at once, so maybe this won't be too bad. I already have the subject, but now I must build the entire piece off of a 2-measure recitative.

Buy Alfred Mann's book.
