Rubinstein's playing of the Second Concerto, or Ashkenazy's rendition of the First.

I observe a conspicious omission of his two-pianist music...

Horowitz didn't play (publically) or record #2.
I vote for William Kapell's #2 and 3 __ THE BEST.. and would have to agree with Rach himself that Corelli Variations are his best piece:)

I have never heard the Corelli variations.  Where can one get the sheet music for them, as well as perhaps a good CD?

I would recommend Shura Cherkassky's live recording from London in the 1980s if you can get hold of it - I don't think it is commercially available though. Other than that, Ashkenazy is very impressive too,

 2nd Concerto: Kapell/Bernstein, Kapell/Steinberg
 3rd Concert: Kapell/MacMillan, Kapell/Heinze, Horowitz/Barbirolli, Horowitz/Rodzinsksi, Gilels/Cluytens Katsaris/??

And I'm eagerly awaiting the Cherkassky.

Are you referring to the live recording at the 1972 Queen Elisabeth Competition ?

well...
my corelli variations are a separate publication.. by boosey and hawkes from memory.
as far as a recording goes, Pletnev's is a little idiosyncratic [but good]... and rach didn't record it [as far as i know].. you might just have to work from the score...

Kapell/Reiner,

There's an even better recording (IMO) with Ormandy from 1944, unfortunately it's not commercially available.

What about Rachmaninoff's 4th? You can't forget that, even though it's always overlooked by many people.  ::)
Currently working on:
*Prelude, Op.23 N.4 (Rachmaninoff)
*Prelude & Fugue in F major, WTC II (Bach)
...not fully decided on what else to start (most likely will be a Liszt, Schubert, or Medtner)...

One that I think is overlooked is his humble Prelude 23 10. It is one of the pieces you have to listen to multiple times in order to fully respect it. It is such a beautiful and sad piece. Although it sounds simple its not exactly easy.

I love the sonatas.

Haven't found a recording of the first I like very much, but I like both Horowitz and Grimaud in the 2nd quite a bit.

Ashkenazy for the E major prelude (Op 32 #3).  Something about that is just amazing.

Lugansky on all of the Etudes Tableaux.  The Eb minor Op 33, and C minor Op 39 are just mindbending!  The amount of sonority he can get from the uppermost notes while having such a powerful bass... I always have to go back 30 seconds or so in each to keep hearing certain parts over and over.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Well, once upon a time there was a record called "The Golden Age of Piano Virtuosi", and it had the sound of a piano roll, cut by Rachmaninoff himself, and having several numbers, including my favorite, Etude-Tableau opus 39 no. 6 (A - minor).
