In search of a Prokofiev score
on: January 11, 2004, 08:00:52 PM
I have been trying for a while to get the score for one of Prokofiev’s early pieces.

-      I heard it played by Frederic Chiu, in his CD set: “Sergei Prokofiev – Complete Music for solo Piano” (Harmonia Mundi)
-      It is on track 5 of CD 5. The information on the CD describes it as “Juvenilia”, composed between 1904 – 1906, and it is titled “Presto”.
-      I am assuming that a score is available (unless Chiu is playing from an autograph).
-      This piece is not in the collection of early compositions published by Boosey & Hawkes.
-      I tried contacting both Boosey & Hawkes and the Prokofiev Archives without success (they never replied :'().

Can anyone help?

I am not sure if this page is available anymore (I get a "This page cannot be found" message).

(But thanks anyway :D)

By the way, it does not need to be for free, I am quite happy to buy it.

Do you mean this site?

https://muslib.mmv.ru/piano_eng.htm

That one is still accessible, but has almost no Prokofiev, just a few of the op. 12 piano pieces. :'(

Have you asked him?

https://fredericchiu.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=8&start=0&

He says Ricordi and Schott [mebbe explains why they aren't available, don't switch the camcorder on :) ], as opposed to Boosey Hawkes [hic]

Assuming he means https://www.ricordi.com and https://www.schott-music.com/ I couldn't find it. Closest on the Ricordi site [because infantali sounds a bit juvenilia to me, but it's probably Peter and the wolf] was :-

NR 134230   Prokofiev, Sergej MANOSCRITTI INFANTILI PER PF. pp.53     € 16,00     M-041-34230-6

I couldn't find a site that was working with that in to see the contents though www.buymusic.it might have fixed their site by the time you read this though...

Have you asked at www.pianophilia.com?  The most extraordinarily obscure pieces show up there.  One has to be a member to download, but membership is free and requires no information other than an email address.

I would be inclined to post a request on his own forum-fredericchiu.com. My own teacher obtained a score this way.

However, there is already a post on the forum dated today asking for the same piece.

Was that you Bernhard??

Moi? Mais non!

That was a big coincidence. I guess there are other people with good musical taste in this world besides me. (But are they as good looking?);D

Now I will be watching the forum like a hawk.

Thanks for the tip.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Leahcim, thank you very much indeed. :D

The Ricordi reference was most helpful. It is unfortunate that they do not have an index (it could be Prokofiev's pieces for children op. 65). I have ordered it anyway.

I also went to Chiu's forum (see above) and now I am hoping he can asnwer the same question someone asked.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

I know exactly how frustrated you are  :'( throughout the 1980's I searced in vain for Medtner scores (in the USA) in libraries, music stores, calling publishers, dealers (of sheet music... ;) even called the Soviet consulate! They were not helpful... My only Medtner connection Eduard Conus (a student of the man himself) died right after I met him  :'( But now! I sit down in my office, click here and there and maybe over there, and it comes up on this screen, and I can PRINT IT OUT!!! AND MORE CHEAPLY THAN EVER BEFORE!!!!!  ;) ;) :) :) :) :D :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

HAPPYHAPPYJOYJOYHAPPYHAPPYJOYJOYHAPPYHAPPYJOYJOYHAPPYHAPPYJOYJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!! ::) ;D

It will turn up; some dude was lokking for Agitato by Grieg, recorded by Ove Andsnes, and finally found it, I think; can't remember what thread that was..don't worry, your juvenile Prokofiev ship will come in !  :D

Update!

Today I got a  phone call from my local music shop, and they informed me that my Prokofiev album had arrived. I went there and looked throuhg the book with some trepidation, and on page 7, there it was: Presto in C major :D :D :D

Almost two years looking for it! :P

Special thanks to Leahcim who actually put me on the right track: it was indeed the Ricordi "manuscritti infantili" (Chiu's forum on the other hand was mostly useless - I don't think the has the time to look and answer the posts there).

Thank you all :D

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Not entirely - at least, if the poster goes back to check, he'll find the answer :)
