Mystery member.
on: September 09, 2006, 11:31:27 PM
Greetings.

If you haven't already noticed, there is a member of this forum with immense power, but remains an absolute mystery. Is he/she an auspicious member, or a ruthless potentate? The webmaster, if you will, hasn't uttered a post and has logged on never. Is he another moderator?

perhaps he is hidden and his actions cannot be seen by inferior members such as ourselves.

Maybe he's the one responsible for the little prism icon thingy.

This is for sure one of the most puzzling mysteries of Piano Forum.

About five years ago I recieved this email:

Quote
From: <webmaster@pianoforum.net>
To: <admin@pianoforum.net>
Sent: Saturday, September 01, 2001 2:22 PM
Subject: Piano Forum

Dear Johan,

Your login details are:
username: admin
password: xe8Fnz7mS+xh%u#iC

Please login at:
https://www.pianoforum.net/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?action=login

Regards,
webmaster

I just followed the instructions and logged in.
The website looked nice but for some reason the atmosphere was very cold and dark...
The central part of it was the forum which had classical piano related categories setup but no posts whatsoever. There were only two members registered, admin and webmaster.
I thought this email was just a mistake and since this was just in the beginning of my last year of studies at RAM in London I was busy with this and did not reflect over the email for a few weeks. Suddenly it occurred to me that the username "admin" was probably not some Hebrew name as I first had thought. I logged in again and realized the account had complete administrational control of the forum!
I thought this must mean something special and invited my pianist friends who told their friends and so on. Now five years later we are 12811 members here but the mystery of how it started and who webmaster is/was remains.
There are some legends in circulation though of which two are considered the most likely.

One is something about that the website was built in seven days. It is amazingly quick since it is told to been from the day the domain pianoforum.net was registered until the last html tag was closed. The project was then handed over from the mysterious creator to the pianists via this email.

The other important theory is describing the creation as a result of a hard disk crash on a web server in Kallax (up in the very northern part of Sweden). It is unknown what was on the hard drive before since the crash was causing all the billions of 0 and 1 bits to be completely and randomly reordered. By a quite unlikely coincidence the bits happened to be ordered like a foundation for a classical piano related website which has now naturally developed into what Piano Street is today.

The first theory may at first appears as more likely but the second is the only theory that really explains why the person behind the webmaster account do not appear to exist.

It would cause an uproar should the day have been exactly on the day.
