He's 21 right now. Do you think playing the paganini etudes is as much an achievement as playing the complete Chopin etudes?
Being 21 doesn't mean he
just learned the paganini etudes, most likely he learned it in his teen years, which is quite remarkable. I have not seen so many ppl managing to play the paganini etudes in their teen years.
:Well put that aside, Yundi Li, he's just
:spectacular. Iunno about that Piano-e-competition
:(actually yes I do)
what do you know about the piano-e-comp?
well I admit I dunno everything, I've heard about the piano-e-competition and it's quite prestigious I believe, but other than that I can't say I know much more about it.
:but Yundi Li won the 1st place in the 14th International
:Chopin Competition, after 10 years (theres one every 5
:years) of no 1st places because the judges thought no
:one could bring out the spirit of Chopin enough.
Actually, that's not exactly true
That's only what they tell the public.
Umm... okay, then what's your side of the story? Go check the official competition website for the past records.
:I read on the back of the front cover of his Chopin
:recordings cd case, it said that after he won he
:requested piano lessons with the famous Polish pianist
:Krystian Zimmerman, and even he said that he had
:nothing to teach the talented pianist!
He also said he wanted to be "the next Zimmerman". Now don't get me wrong, I like Zimmerman's playing just fine - but.. shouldn't one try to aim a little higher? maybe Horowitz or Rubinstein if you want to go with someone of this century...
Someone of this century? Excuse if I'm wrong, but I believe that Zimerman is at the very least still alive at the moment. And what one aims is entirely their business, and not everyone sets Horowitz or Rubinstein as their role models.
:Anyways you guys should really check up his pieces on
:winmx or somethin. It's definately worth it.
I have. And they're rather bland.
I would like to hear your insights on some of his pieces.
Sounds like you know him pretty well.. Have you seen the ad-campaigns they're doing for him in china?
No I haven't really because I don't live in china, I just dug that up from some website. What are they doing for him in china?
Btw, good luck on your performances, mei-ting! Come down to Vancouver in Canada sometime! Love to hear you play!
And jakester - please note I'm not trying to go against you personally or anything, just wanna see some other's ppl's insights on this matter, and after all he's one of my favourite pianists
