changing tastes..
on: September 14, 2006, 03:06:08 AM
lately, I havent been listening to classical music at all.  I have just been going back to my old favorites from before I got into classical, like Queen, Led Zeppelin, and even John Denver and Don Mclean..

I used to be a Liszt guy and I was proud to say I was a Liszt guy.. Are those days coming to an end?

My tastes go through phases as well.  Sometimes we just get a little oversaturated and need a change.

I think my cycle is to surround myself with a particular taste for a while, then reverting back to old tastes a bit before discovering a new taste...  At that point the previous taste could be considered an 'old favorite'.

Variety I s'pose.

I was once a proud Iron Maiden guy.

Yes, I have phases too. Two years ago There was a time I just listened to pop music like Shania Twain or Kylie Minogue every day ::) Now I'm back to piano mainly.

how about a phase where you don't listen to music at all... Sometimes i need a break, every commercial on tv has to have music on it and so does everything else. It gets sick... but never piano music    ;)

My tastes seem to change almost on a daily basis.

It is good to listen to a wide variety of music.

At the moment "Flatt & Scruggs" rule the earth.

Completely normal.

My taste in music changes a lot too. Right now I'm listening to a whole bunch of music "styles" and that's fine with me.

I discover new music to love all the time.

A friend recently gave me music to do aerobics by -- a lot of Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana and Pearl Jam.  It was eye-opening for me, who normally listens only to classical.  NIN especially.  They do a lot of electronic stuff and distortions and unusual rhythms and just screaming/singing that sounds like a lot of serious modern composers, except NIN is actually more listenable!  Perfect for a high-energy, 30-minute aerobics workout!

That's something else I was thinking of this week, how much we can cheapen music by having it on all the time...  It becomes 'background', something to fill the air while you're busy doing or thinking other things.

I realize I have the habit of treating a lot of my favorite music as background.  It must numb me to the effect of music to have it on all the time.  So I've been trying to reserve my music listening to when I can actually listen and focus on the music.

I caught myself just now and turned off the Beethoven I had going on as I type this :P.

Also having continual input from recordings leaves no space for the imagination to come up with ideas of its own.

My tastes change too, :)

Once I found myself listening to broadway.

However, if one day I fancy pop I'll have to change my name *cringe* :P
I doubt that will happen, anyway.....

I will avoid the word 'taste' since I don't think taste exists the way we normally think it does when we use the word.

But I do think it would be bad if the focus of your intersts in music is static. The best would be if it expands. But it at least needs to be dynamic.

Definitely.  Static tastes is stagnation, and as the world moves forward stagnation is the equivalent of falling behind.

I started off by being hardcore into chopin... then I changed to 20th century music, mostly early... while I switched to this music (Debussy, Ravel, etc.)  I started listening to hardcore music, and some screamo... bands like Alexisonfire and Avenged Sevenfold...  I always alternate between early 20th century and this hardcore music, but I refuse to listen to an entire classical-romantic piece, even if it's one I'm practicing... etudes are a different story, but something like a Chopin Waltz or Beethoven sonata or anything of the sort, I just can't bear to listen for more than a minute  :-[

I've noticed my tastes go through phases too - for a long time I listened to only pop music -sometimes it's nice to listen to music with singing rather than just instrumental.  Now I often like to listen to world music and jazz.
