How close to the kitchen?
on: September 23, 2006, 08:44:10 PM
Greetings.

Due to my neighbors we had to move the piano from the adjacent wall and closer to the kitchen wall. Our living room and kitchen are joined together, but there is a wall deviding half the kitchen and the living room. On one side of the wall is the stove. On the other side is my piano. I was wondering if this could have an effect on the piano, due to the close proximity to the kitchen.

The previous location (the close to the neighbor wall), had windows too, so sunlight was a factor. Could that too have an impact, sunlight?

well i think so.....i think grease , moisture , etc could get to your piano....but that's just my opinion... see if they will let you move it to your bedroom or something?

You don't understand. There is a wall in between the piano and the stove, so no liquid can (hopefully) get in there. The wall is not completely separating the kitchen from the living room though.

Oh. Okay. It's an actual wall, so my main concern is about the heat changes. My mom claims that it remains cool during cooking so that is a relief.

Oh, the bedroom. I wish. That is all I can say.

Debussy, I don't know how old you are, but maybe it's time to think about moving out.  ;) You must be driving your parents mad  ;D

Ada how old are you? Do you live with your parents, or are you independant?

P.S: I am the one who makes the jokes. ;)

An oven tends to give lots of heat that rises, eventually, even if your piano is half a meter from that wall it'll not be healthy for the piano ;-)

I would move it somewhere else

I will record the temperature changes. I will record the temperature before the fire is on, and record it after the fire has burned for an hour.

We had the same problem a number of years ago.  Our tuner advised us to place a sheet of plaster-board between the piano and the wall.  This worked a treat, and we never had a problem with tuning (the usual every 6 months was sufficient).

It is important that the plasterboard is cut down to match the size of the back of the instrument, and that it is of the insulating type, i.e. one side is coated in foil.  This will reflect any residual heat from the oven away from the piano.

Hope this helps,

And
