Im New to Piano's, Help Me Start
on: September 24, 2006, 05:23:55 PM
I know nothing about music or pianos/keyboards. I did get a keyboard and i want to start to play. The keyboard is a cheap Casio CTK-560L. Where should i start? Im not a big classical music fan so im not sure if thats a problem? I normally like to listen to all kings of rock. I know that alot of the stuff i listen to does have piano/keyboards in it like Nine Inch Nails. So could you just point me in the right direction, like what DVD or book to buy, what to learn first.

Thanks,
Zach

Greetings.
Well, Zach, I'm not an expert. I'm also learning alone, and I'm looking for help... But since I started sooner, I will just tell you that you should learn chords. Most people would say "no, don't learn chords, 'cause you'd be damaging your technic". But it helped me alot, I evolved alot. If you're not interested in a professional career as a classical player, you shouldn't be afraid of learning chords. Here are good places to learn those.

Learn how to improvise, and that kind of stuff. I also play (electric/classic) guitar (learnt alone), and learning what I've learnt for three months helped me alot understanding music, and it gave me good ideas for rock songs. I'm sure it will help you alot too.
I've read about this guy's method (Duane), and it seems good for someone who doesn't want a classical career:

Good luck, Zach. Goodbye for now.

It sounds to me like you want an electric guitar.

Unless you're into blues / stride / boogie woogie piano, in which case sell the casio and buy a piano and scour the TV channels for shows with Jools Holland on for "the basics" - the "not the basics" are what you get after playing "the basics" for (a) 30 years or (b) Money - whichever comes first.

For rock keyboard, try this experiment, learn to play Em, now play it and sustain it on the keyboard  for 30 minutes [if you get bored, some of that tape that doesn't leave a goo comes in handy] while a guitarist friend pretends to be David Gilmour. Now visit https://www.guitars.co.uk.
