Pedaling on the tremolo of the Pathetique Sonata

Is  It aproriate to use the left pedal (I forget what it's supposed to be called) to control the volume of this section?

What? No way!? You can't use the pedal just for the tremolo, you will effect the RH

Yes I think it is called sostonuto (probably spelled  Incorrectly). I was wondering partialy if the proffesors at a collage audition would like it very much if I used it. I figure if it is appropriate they can't complain.
