Kawai Digital - Right pedal starting to "die"?
on: September 27, 2006, 04:52:29 AM
Instrument in question is a Kawai CP150 digital piano (which you can see here if unfamiliar with the instrument; the pic is not mine, found thanks to trusty Google image searches).

I've noticed recently (and by "recently" I mean the past couple of months since my time spent at the keyboard has been drastically diminished courtesy of far too much to do for university world) that the right pedal, even while fully depressed, occasionally and unpredictably is starting to act as if I'm half-pedaling. That is, even while down to its farthest position, whatever I'm playing sometimes sustains only for a few seconds when it should be held to last for far longer than that.

Has anyone had this happen to theirs, what was the cause, and how was it fixed? Naturally, I'd much rather just finally get a decent-sized grand, but ... you know, money/space/etc. concerns.  :-\

Thanks much.

If you are lucky it could be just the contact switch in the pedal either dirty or worn. If you have a way of getting to the internals of the pedal, take a look there.  If you can also remove the cable that connects the pedal to to the console electronics, switch it to a pedal to see if THAT pedal works the sustain mode.

If its just the pedal, then you should be able to fix or replace it yourself based on what you find out from doing the stuff above.

Now, if you're not so lucky then the Eprom or card or CPU controlling this function is going brain-dead. Looks like a call to the pros.

Hope you stay on the lucky side of this one.
