Concerto Competition
on: September 27, 2006, 09:03:39 PM
I have several options, and can't decide myself !! I must do one movement of a concerto... so my choices are :
Prok 1 (Complete)
Rach 1 1st mvt.
Saint-Saens 2 1st mvt.
Prok 3 1st mvt.
Totentaz
Liszt 1 and 2 (complete)

That is for a national Competition. What would you think is the best ? And by the way, i badly need a record of the Saint-Saens no.2 ... anybody have it ? I can't find it anywhere ! Does anyone has a link or w/e ?

I broke the string of the lowest F yesterday by playing the beginning of Totentanz :\ .

Why don't you perform the whole Prok3 or Rach1? Then the choice would be more obvious.

That's the price you pay for being moderate in everything.  See, if I were you, my name would be Ilovepie.  But that's just me.

22 minutes time limit. That's why they request only one movement ... but that I can do the whole liszts and whole prok 1.

just quietly, the Rach 1 is bloody difficult. You're better off playing something else.

Id say Rach 1, good showcase of your technical ability. But I personally would go with Saint-Saens 1st movement, very moving piece of music.

DONT DO RACH 1!!!  Just from experience, but at CMC someone played Rach1 and I didnt think it sounded that great on 2 pianos.  I can say that either liszt would do extremely well, as they fill up the time limit rather nicely.  I did well with Liszt No.2.  That being said, Prok1 would be also very sweet.

why does it have to be those specific numbers? why rach as opposed to rach 2-4? or why saint-saëns 2 as opposed to 1 or 3-5? youre limiting yourself too much. check out the other ones. you may like them more. also, its not good to play overrated and overplayed pieces like a few on your list.

From experience, stick to prok1, or either liszt, maybe totentanz.  You could try to play Rach4, or Saint-Saens 3-5.  Seriously, even though I think these concerti are great pieces, they are simply not competition material.  Marc-Andre Hamelin when in this competition played the 1st mvmt of Saint-Saens 2.

I cant think of anyone in the whole competition in the last 4 years to try this, but hey, if it can be done then go for it.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
