Romantic piece
on: September 28, 2006, 11:40:39 AM
Hello!

I have to choose a virtuosistic romantic piece for my repertoire this year. It can't be longer than 13-15 minutes. Everyone ends up playing Chopin (mostly the Scherzos and Ballades), Liszt (my teacher chose La Valleé d'Obermann for me), Schumann, Schubert, some Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov but I wanted to play something a little bit different, from other romantic composers. Everybody in Portugal plays the same things...  ::)
What do you suggest?

Best regards,
Carla

How about Pabst Paraphrase on Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegine or perhaps Scriabin Sonata #4?
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Thank you, dnephi!
I don't know Pabst's Paraphrase (I'll try to find a recording), but Scriabin, although I appreciate it very much, I'm already playing his etude op. 42-5 so it isn't a very good idea.
More ideas?

Ah ok ;).  Thumbs up if you can take on 42-5 btw.

I like Liszt a lot, but there are plenty of alternatives, and I can see how you want something unique.  There's a Brahms Paganini variations or Klavierstucke op. 118.  Want to try a left-hand alone Godowsky study?  I like the transcription of Op. 25 No. 12 for left hand alone as much as if not more than the original.
Alkan's Etudes Op. 39 are good, with Op. 39 being very witty but difficult.
Franck's prelude chorale and fugue and prelude aria and finale (?) are popular.

Busoni's transcriptions are good.

Just some Ideas I'd toss out for things which aren't Liszt Schumann Schubert or Mendelssohn, although I haven't heard too much Mendelssohn played, with his variations serieuses being incredible.

Franck also wrote a ballade in B major, I think. You could look into that.

Also:

Brahms Sonatas are really underplayed. Any one of the 3 would be good.

Albeniz Iberia Suite

Medtner Sonatas- I suggest, for the first one, either Sonata tragica, Sonata skazka, or Sonata reminiscenza, or perhaps his early one in F minor Op. 5.

Bortkiewicz Ballade in C# minor Op.42

Faure Theme and Variations in C# minor Op.73, Nocturne No.6 in Db major, Nocturne No.13 in B minor, or perhaps the set of Preludes Op.103.

Or, if counterpoint is more your style:

Taneyev Prelude and Fugue in G# minor, Op.29

Glazunov Prelude and Fugue in D minor Op.62

You could always to some of the more obscure works from those composers... like Chopin's La Ci Darem La Mano or Fantasie in f minor, Liszt's Ballade, Mendelssohn's Fantasy, or Rachmaninov's underplayed (currently) 1st Sonata.

Or...

Brahms       -  Rhapsody Op.79, No.1, Sonatas
Balakirev    -  Nocturne No.3 in d minor
Gottschalk  -  Grand Tarantelle or L'Union op.48
Chaminade -  Two or three etudes
Field           -  Nocturnes
Faure          -  Theme & Variations in c# minor, op.73
Glinka/Balakirev - Piano Transcription, "Fantasy on a life for the Tsar"
(Fanny) Mendelssohn - Sonatas, Songs without Words Op.6 or Op.8

Oh, also....

Lyadov     -  Variations sur un theme Polonais Op.51
Lyapunov -  Fetes de Noel, Op.41, 4 Songs Op.14 or Op. 71, or some of his transcendental etudes.

etc.

How about Liszt Grande Fantasy de Bravoure sur La Campanella or Clochette de Paganini?  Those are obscure and unpopular.  There's also the Robert le Diable Fantasy.    ;)  Or the Tarantella, or an obscure Hungarian Rhapsody, such as the fine #s 10 and 19 or the neglected Spanish Rhapsody of excellent craftmanship.

Wow! Look at all those suggestions! Thank you so much!  :D
I'm going to have a hard (but fun) time on choosing, and I'm sure one of them is the special thing I've been searching for!
I forgot to tell that Brahms is often played too... I want to start studying his 3rd sonata on the 2007-08 lective year  ;)
I love Liszt's 2nd Ballade but my teacher doesn't appreciate it very much!  :-\
I already played Albeniz' "El puerto", I just love this composer, but it seems to me that my school board of piano teachers won't accept this composer as romantic...  :P
I also adore Franck's "Prelude, Choral and Fugue", but my teacher believes this is a work for my last year's recital (that and Kreisleriana), so I'll have to wait!
I'm going to check on your suggestions!

Best regards,
Carla
