Beethoven Sonata op 2 n 1
on: September 28, 2006, 01:46:01 PM
Hello to all the members,
I'm currently working on the first movement of this sonata.
I use the shirmer's edition and I see no pedal marking whatsoever, does anyone know what a good pedal marking is on this piece?I 'd really appreciate the help, thanks.

Oh god.

Schirmer is pretty bad for Beethoven sonatas.

Where do you need help? Any specific place in the movement?

Pedal indications are all editorial on this piece.  I love the first movement of this sonata, its Beethoven underground.

myotherself probably has most of the pedalling answers.  for myself, considering that i am a student/teacher - and noting that it has a dedication to haydn - would play this almost like a mozart sonata.  very cleanly with very little pedal.  myotherself can probably tell you exactly where.

perhaps starting at measure 20 using a combo and then at 22 with a bit of damper only?  is it a bad bad thing to use the damper pedal a lot on the sf's?  (if you can play it fine without?)  does using the damper on the sf's make the sound less 'harsh?'  or can you practice and make it sound not harsh w/out pedal?  is this #1 choice - no pedal.

Well, I play this sonata with little pedal.
Only when i'm holding those chords FF  and a little bit for those tremelos.

I've never tried to use the damper pedal during those Sfs , maybe It could make the sound less harsh.
