Best to do a back up old boy.

Next time get yourself an external harddrive.

And a Mac.
Because failure of hardware does not happen with products from Apple  ::) .

It seems this was a software error.

How can data get lost because of a software crash? If you saved it on the HD souldn't it still be there? Did the partition go bad?

Someone who knows what she/he is doing may be able to get the data back, if that it the case. But it's hard to say something about it from my position.

Sorry to hear Mycrabby.

Thanks for the reminder to back-up my files. I store my important stuff on CD's - but I haven't done that for awhile.

John :)

Promey is correct. There are technicians that specialize in retrieving HD data.

Good luck, John :)

Yes, but I think that what you are talking about is even more serious and very expensive. They can retreive data from HD's of computers in officies that went up in fire, things like that. Serious physical damage.

The data may be ok, only the way to acces it may have gone bad. There are special programs to retreive data from partition tables thay became corrupted, etc.

Mac's are not immune to operator error.

I accidentally copied something onto the Program directory.  That deleted every program I had, and it was old enough to not be able to replace it (drive and system incompatibilities.)  I ended up having to throw it away.  Of course it asked me, "are you sure?"  Well, no, I've never been sure, didn't stop me from clicking "yes" though.

I still like Mac's, maybe I'll buy another one some day.  When I started engineering school the computer lab was full of IBMs and there were a couple of Macs in the back.  Nobody was ever on them so I took advantage.  When I graduated, the room was full of Macs, and nobody was on the handful of PCs in the back.

Much sympathy, mine's just done something very similar and is just about recovering, having lost everything on the hard drive... luckily I had everything important backed up... Took it to PC World to start with, who said they couldn't do anything because they don't stock this brand of PC. Which I suppose is understandable, but hardly useful when they're the only computer shop in town. Ended up having to do major surgery myself which so far, touch wood, appears to have worked. Flippin' better have done, can't afford a new computer!
