Blues scale finger settings ?
on: September 29, 2006, 04:14:55 PM

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to practice the blues scale with CORRECT finger settings ;-) I always play it the way it feels best to me, but I notice I cant play fast with my own finger settings ;-)

Let's say for C 2 octaves up & down if possible

Well actually it would be interesting to have the "official" fingerings of the blues scales announced just once! :P Now back to your question, the following fingerings is what i use :
for example for D-blues scale, (notes: D-F-G-Gb-A-C-D) fingerings:

1234-123-123-123 (ascending)
1234-121-234-123 (descending)

so as you can see 4th finger goes to Gb, try it if it works for you and for the rest of the blues scales! 8)

C 1234-123

Db 123-1234

D 1234-123

Eb 123-1234

E 1234-123

F 123-1235

F# 123-1234

G 1234-123

Ab 123-1234

A 1234-123

Bb 123-1234

B 123-1234

I use these fingerings in fast runs, in melodic or motivic playing I may use variants. Note that F is a little different.

Hope this helps.  :)

Glad to help benjamib and also thanx to arenksy for fillin' in some holes :P
Now i love blues scales, i like to mix them with modes , like Dorian and others. But i think we are missing the fingerings for major pentatonic scales! I mean 99% i use minor pentatonic scales (blues scales) but can someone show us the major as well? (arensky?) :P

Thanks for this but what about when playing over two octaves? Your fingerings above don't get 1 on the root for the second octave?
