Since I have no idea of ur current repertoire... I'm gonna suggest you look at Lowell Liebermann's Gargoyles suite... which can be found on gamingforce... there's four pieces in there;  each aren't too long, but my favorite is #4.  Have a listen on amazon, their awesome, but difficult.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

her music just makes me laugh. i mean, how often do you see a piano sonata that requies a bamboo stick?? actually, her chaconne has been performed by demidenko in wigmore hall. that is worth looking at.

I have to play the first two of her Musical Toys for her, she's coming to the conservatory here on 14 october. That's rather scary, playing the pieces for the composer :x .

You could try Rochberg's Short Sonatas.  Or Ginastera's Danzas Argentinas (I like his sonata no.1 better but its a little long).  If you can do it, I recommend Liebermann's Gargoyles.

Are Impressionisitic pieces allowed?  The Ravel Sonatine is fun.

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC IS COMPOSED BY COMPOSERS WHO ARE ALIVE.

Ligeti for instance was a contemporary composers but isn`t anymore, just like Mozart was a contemporary composer a long time ago...

i am in a similar situation. gotta learn a conteporary work for auditions in november-december. starting learning tomorrow lol. anyways the one i chose was from a set of works called 4 Romantic Works by Kenneth Leighton and its the no.1 from the set. its brilliant, climatic and has random spots of great harmony.

Kenneth Leighton is a PAINFULLY ignored composer.  Check out his Six Studies Op. 56.

The study No. 6 is just ferocious.  Great piece.  How bout one of Roslavets' or Dutilleux's short pieces?  Also, Xenakis wrote a rather short and rather playable piece called a r.  I wouldn't suggest using one of his Six Chansons though.  Also, Rautavaara's Etudes Op. 42 are worth looking into, particularly No. 1

its called "à r: hommage à ravel" by xenakis. its probably beyond you, pianistimo. i have never seen any posts by you that imply that you like this type of music.

Is Wild still contemporary?

If you wanted to completly weird the audience out... you could try playing some of Kurtags compositions.  His "Splinters" and "Jatekok" are among the craziest peices I've ever heard.  They're all technically easy, but it's tough to convey the peices succesfully to the audience.  Still, a lot of fun and not too stressfull if you know what your doing.

 Dear Cucudas:
 Some suggestions:
 - Ginastera's Preludios;
 - Messiaen's Preludes;
 - some music by Takemitsu.
 In the case of both series of preludes, you obviously can choose a selection. If you are interested in Takemitsu, Mrs. Noriko Ogawa recorded a CD with his music (by the label BIS, if I'm not mistaken).
 Best wishes!

 Dear Mephisto:
 I have to disagree with your definition. Boulez and Carter are well alive, aren't they? Would you say that their music of the 40's is "contemporary"?
 Best wishes!
Player of what?

Yes, but I think "contemporary music" is a stupid term.

What is your definition?
