Post Your Afflictions
on: September 30, 2006, 08:18:53 PM
Pianistimo gave me an idea for a new thread. Post your afflictions here. I’ll start with mine.

I’ve been suffering from Migraines for many years. The only thing that brings me relief is a drug known as Imitrex. I also recently (through two sleep studies) have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and PLMD (periodic limb movement disorder). The sleep study revealed I stop breathing 35 times an hour while sleeping (gasping for air). And my sleep is interrupted 100 times per hour of sleep.

I’ll be hooked up to a CPAP (device that sends a steady stream of air through my nose/mouth) while I’m sleeping. I’m also taking a drug called Requip for the PLMD (the same drug used for Parkinson’s disease).

The good news is this breathing device may eliminate my Migraines (since my Migraines always begin during my sleep). I'm not getting enough oxygen to my brain - but it hasn't affected my brain at all. ;D

Other than that I’m in perfect health.

Next…

I'm suffering from ECS (Extreme Chronic Stupidity).

My doctor says there's nothing that can be done.  He suggests that I should move to Washington D. C. where I'll at least be surrounded by people who have the same disease.

The first could be cured with a date with pianistimo, paris and yoonie together.
The second is cyclists misfortune. That is difficult to cure.

Affliction: the cause of persistent pain or distress.

I meant this as a physical affliction  that one suffers and/ or is being treated for such as  Parkinson's Desease, Cancer, Black Lung, Ulcers, STD's, etc.

thal doesn't have mysogeny in the worst case scenario.  unlesss.  unless ...he's planning to kill me.  eeeek.  thal, you're scaring me.  the worst part - is that i think i'd let you.  at least let me hear ahinton's jonathan powell play some music first - so i will wish for it.  unless, of course, we sneak out at intermission.  then, i want to see the tower of london.  maybe you can do me in over there.  i sort of want to meet prince william, too.  can you sneak that in?

i'm really thinking that i'd never be able to drive in england.  this left side of the road would kill me first.

johnny-boy - i forgot to say that i totally sympathize with your condition, too.  many conditions people live with for years until they find the correct treatment.  i'm glad you found something that works.  for a minute i thought you said the machine was a CRAP machine.  so glad that it is a CPAP machine.

oh.  and thal.  you have a dodgy knee too?  so that explains the couch time.  and here all along i thought you were just lazy.  believe me, now with this knee - i would do anything to get up and run around all the time.  i just ate three donuts.  and, after all this getting in shape.  you should see me right now.  i look really good.  now, it's just 'get fat all over again.'  unless i force myself on the bike.  but, then if i fall again - i will never recover.

actually, if i fall again - can you just come over and put me out of my misery?  i'm half serious.

Lack of time management skills and mild asthma. Although I've really not got anything to complain of- I haven't missed school due to sickness in 2 years. Although that can sometimes feel like an affliction in itself...
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

Ectopic Atrial Tachycardia - a weird heart arrhythmia basically.  They found it AFTER my second procedure to correct WPW - Wolff Parkinson White syndrome.  The second time, they finally fixed the WPW, and a couple days after I got out of the hospital I started noticing the symptoms that were supposed to be gone.  Oh well.  Usually it's not that bad.  Sometimes it gets going though and I'll almost pass out if I don't lay down.  And sometimes going up stairs aggrivates it.  As does adrenaline.

Also some weird unknown stomach thingy that's causing almost constant nausea.  I'm a good 10-15 pounds underweight, and I have the hardest time gaining.  Although a lot of times I really don't feel like eating.

Both are merely a nuisance.  It's really nothing compared to what some people have to deal with.

Yes, I know some people would gladly switch places.
Funny - my doctor told me to eat as much as I can and don't exercise.  Don't you wish your doctor would tell you that?

I don't know that I would call it heaven that I can eat and not exercise.  I'm actually about 15% below average weight for my height/build.  The no exercise thing is to conserve what little muscle mass I have.  Fortunately, I love french fries (yeah, probably not the healthiest thing), but it's a good excuse to go get them "for the calories."  But anyway, that's why I was looking into Yoga (in another thread) - it would be something to do, but not burn too many calories and junk.

jpianoflorida,

What do you take for your heart stuff?  I use Flecainide and propranolol.  I've tried other stuff, but they don't really seem to work very well.  The Flec seems to be the best.  I guess everyone's is different.  Sometimes the aerobics and exercise really bothers my heart.  Sometimes it's ok.

Since last November I've been suffering from Gastroparesis.  It's pretty much what it sounds like a paralyzation of the stomach.  The stomach stops pumping and food just sits there.  It causes constant nausea/fullness though I've luckily not started losing weight.  You might wanna talk to your doctor about that.  It took me a good few months to get it diagnosed.

Some people suffer from mental afflictions, so it's not all physical.  Of course, I don't suffer from mental afflictions, just depression now and again.  Mostly I am plagued with arthritis in the elbow and wrist.  Pretty annoying for a pianist.  Hasn't been diagnosed by a doctor, just have to tolerate it.  At least I hope that's what it is, because if it isn't, I have some serious things broken in there.

You guys should be nice to pianistimo.  Enough said.  I do think it would be nice to not have to excercise, and to eat all I wanted and more.  Just thinking about it make me gain weight!  But heaven will be even better than that!

I have had laser surgery once on each eye.  I was pregnant with #2 when they first diagnosed it, so they couldn't treat it.  There was bleeding through many little canals in my eye, which reached the retina.  Once that happened, there was nothing to be done.  They did stop the bleeding in the other eye thanks to the laser.  I see pretty well,  Sometimes I have to look very closely at music to tell exactly which notes are written, but usually it only effects my depth perception.   penguinlover

I TOTALLY agree.....unless I'm mistaken I have never read a post where pianistimo put anyone else down, she does always give her lenghtly opinions, but I read them as genuine beliefs of hers and I respect that! I think you misread what I put.

I think _I_ should be nice - (what I changed yours to) is an opinion about my own behaviour which is something I can try to do.
I think _you_ should be nice - (what you said) is just an opinion about how "I" think other people should behave.

Hey JP,

I'm sure I have some food allergies. But I haven't seen any consistency between headaches and what I eat. I usually get headaches after I've been into REM sleep.

From the sleep studies I had, it indicates I'm not getting enough oxygen while sleeping.

oh, I have numberous ones of these:

1 - tendonitis (not so good for a pianist)
2 - constant lung infections (not so great for when I'm doing choir practice)
3 - double jointedness..... this may sound good, but my joints keep dislocating themselves and its quite inconvenient
4 - I'm short-sighted and it annoys me
5 - my shins aren't aligned right so I can't bend my feet properly
6 - my hands are always too cold to play
7 - when I do octave glissando, my fingers bleed, but I think I'm pushing the boundaries somewhat here, because I'm sure it happens to everyone
