knockout
on: September 30, 2006, 11:46:27 PM
Us mob was down for the Knockout eh. We come from Walgett, Wagga, Dubbo, Kempsey, up the mish at Bogga, Tenterfield, Taree, Broken Hill. Me an my brothers’ la, we was sittin’ round eh, drinking beer and smokin’ yandi. Then we started walkin round,  just walkin’ round, and we seen these white c***ts.’

The boys were up early that morning. It was just after 2am. Jack, Johnno and Mark were round at Marty’s to pick him up, and they were chucking bags in the car and strapping on surfboards.

The plan was to hit the Pacific Highway early, before the long weekend traffic, and head straight north to Yamba where they were staying by the beach. The hoped to be there in about eight hours, just in time for the match.

It was Grand Final day tomorrow in Melbourne, and the Sydney Swans were taking on the Eagles.

It was also the weekend of the annual Rugby League Knockout. Koori teams from around the state had converged in Sydney to reclaim the trophy.  It was one of the biggest days of the year for the community.

So we say to these white cunts, ya gotta cig bro? And the white cunts say no mate, we don’t smoke. Gerald says *** you ya fuckin’ gubbas I don’t like your fuckin’attitude and one a them gives us the finger eh. And I says ya gubba dogs don’t mess with us we’ll be back.

The boys come back inside and lock the door, sensing trouble. They hear the sound of swearing and something being smashed. Mark’s head is in his hands. I't's his mother’s car.

They go away after a while but while Marty’s on the phone to the cops they come back, this time with more of their mates and a couple of girls. They saunter casually up the street, checking out the cars.

This one’s the ***’s, one of them says.

The cops are infuriatingly slow. Marty says there’s people smashing cars in my street. “We’ll send some cars down,” says a female constable.

By the time the cops arrive the neighbours are out on the street. There’s broken beer bottles on the road. The gay boys are out in their matching pyjamas, blinking sleepily and looking in bewilderment at their car. The windscreen’s shattered and the sides are kicked in.

Marty and the boys are standing there laughing. The drongos have smashed up the wrong car.

We showed them white cunts not ta give us mob attitude eh. Them and them whitefellla cunjie pigs eh. Fuckin’ showed ’em where they are. This is Eora nation eh. They’re fuckin’ standin’on blackfella land. This one’s for you TJ. This one’s for you bro.

true (as close as possible!) but then again you got us last year so I don't feel apologetic  8)

It's funny, I'd consider music (and more specifically piano) my one real passion in life. Yet I've never been reduced to tears from listening to music. However, I've cried many times for sports related reasons : when I was 10 and my b'ball team lost the semi-final, when El Guerrouj lost at Sydney, when we lost the Ashes, and when the Coast went down last year. Forget vegemite, the true test of whether you're "aussie" or not is how much you love sport!  ;)

Not wrong. It might sound like a horrible cliche but my most memorable moment would have to be Cathy Freeman winning the 400m at Sydney. I was there and it was an incredible moment.

At the same time she ran the race Tatiania Gregorieva was doing the pole vault and everyone was torn between watching Freeman crumple to the ground after her victory and perving at this amazing blonde chick on the screen. Of course that was pre Tatiana's "show me the money" gaffe  ::)

The second best ever moment in Aussie sport was when that hapless bloke with the spikey hair (I've forgotten his name) won a gold medal for speed skating cos all the other competitors fell over.

Ray Bradbury.  And his win coined the phrase "doing a Bradbury". Perkins gold in Atlanta was pretty spectacular too.
