any advice on tackling this piece? i like this one, and anyone have any suggestions of pieces grade 6-8 to add to my repatoir, romantic era, thanks

My advice would be (as with all chopin) to get a very good grip on the left hand perhaps even memorize it. The Right hand is fairly simple the runs are mostly scale work, therefore the key is getting the Left hand jumps. Watch the key sig. as well. I recently learned this piece and I am now working on Chopin's Nocturne Op. 1 No. 3, just giving you an Idea  of what I did. Hope this has been helpful. I have heard a lot about Hofmann´s live  recording of the Minute Walts where he plays the scales in thirds.

Anyone have it?

I have a feeling there are two arrangements in thirds. One is by Moriz Rosenthal, and it brings the first theme back as a countersubject to the second one. Ignaz Friedman made a mean recording, ending with a Viennese flavour. I may be able to post it in a day or two.

The difficulty has nothing to do with it.  Minute waltz is a lyrical piece, and Mephisto Waltz is fury, lyrical, and besides, it's the first heavy metal song ever made.

Lyrical, you say? Well, all right then, here is an mp3 of a recording I made at a rather slow speed, if one takes modern performances as the norm. I actually quite like it at this speed, especially in more intimate surroundings, because it's more suggestive of 19th century dancing, but I expect the youngsters will want it to race.

One of the drawbacks with a foot-operated pianola is that you can't bring out the upper of the two notes in the thirds, and unless you edit the roll, you can't shorten the length of the accompanimental chords. At any rate, it will allow you to hear the notes of the piece, without fear of infringing mechanical copyright.

yes, and as huge a fan as I am of Hofmann's, I don't find it very impressive. His technique wasn't nearly what it used to be when it was recorded, also he plays the first part (only the repeat is in thirds) at a tremendous clip, so when the thirds come it, the tempo drops considerably. Why he would waste his time with this piece (he recorded it numerous times) is beyond me.

I just ain't sure about the disposition of all the major/minor thirds in the record. I don't say they're bad ... I just think some sound doubtfull, others are okay.

The Minute waltz is one of my favourite pieces, ever! If you want to learn it as quick as possible, you should memorize the left hand first. The right hand melody is not that difficult and you should apply T.O. mainly on the fast sections. In my opinion this piece is still very beautiful at slower speeds, not too slow though. Then when you are confident and relaxed try increasing the speed. I remember when i was learning it , i focused (after i memorized the left hand) mainly on accuracy of the jumps. Work on them at a speed that its comfortable for you.

Well, thank you! It's one thing to upload pianola music, because I'm the expert, and you can't criticise me. Well, p'raps you can! But I'm a little diffident of trespassing on the piano's territory. Of course I like music to be exciting at times, but I like gentleness too, perhaps above everything. We don't live in a very gentle world, and I feel that pianism has lost some of its former gentleness too. Mind you, I have been pleased to find some very gentle people on this forum, usually hiding behind acerbic wit - that's a real give away!
