Looking for short contrast piece
on: October 03, 2006, 11:49:10 AM
I'm a happy amateur pianist. One year of piano lessons. I've been asked to play at a public event at work in about four months. I've decided to begin with the first piece from Schumann's Bunte Blätter (Op. 99) and to end with Mendelssohn's last Song without words (102/6). However, I need something to put in between these pieces - they are, in a sense, too alike in tempo and mood. Mendelssohn's relaxed piece would come off better if preceded by a piece which creates more of a contrast. It would have to be something that doesn't take forever to learn, but which would fit together with these two reflective pieces, like the piquant beef in the midst of a hamburger. Very grateful for any suggestions! It doesn't have to be a Romantic piece.

I meant to post, but maybe I didn't.  I suggest Schumann's Kinderszenen "An Important Event." or Waltz in E Minor, Op. Posth.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Thanks for your suggestions - I'm not familiar with the waltz but "An Important Event" seems too difficult for me to play.  :P I guess I would rank as a 4th or 5th level guy. Are there any examples of how piano recitals have been put together, what kinds of ideas figure in the selection, what goes with what, etc.? I'm a novice, an amateur, so any kind of help would be great.
