The oldest CD/record in your collection
on: October 04, 2006, 11:19:48 AM
Here's a real memory test - what is the oldest record (CD or LP) in your collection, when and where did you buy it?

To start off, I haven't got any LPs, but my oldest CD is a Naxos disc of Handel's Organ Concerti, bought in 1989.

Your turn. :)

did you have to post this in this forum? I'm stuffing up my ratio here (I try to limit ABP posting). To the question: I'm still young, so my oldest recording is a cassette of french songs for kids I got when I was 2-3, it not really old, about 18 yrs. Il était un petit navire...

If we talk about the actual recording itself (not the cd, record etc) I have recordings of hofmann from 1903. And then there's Brahms cylinder from 1889 (iirc). It is spooky to listen to these.

The Sound of Music soundtrack.  :P

It was a Valentine's day gift, I think I was... umm... 6? 7? So like.. 12 years ago, about.

That's for CDs. The oldest cassette would be like.. 17 years old, and I have no idea what it would be.

I have some 78's that were left to me when my Auntie died.

The recording of Paderewski playing a Beethoven Concerto, I think dates from 1925 and takes up to 6 or 7 discs It is bound in a huge leather case with individual sleeves for each disc. Someone once told me it was worth something, so i have it kept in a bank vault.

Also, there are some Fats Waller discs which i think were about 1935.

Oldest record; I have over 500 78rpm records, the oldest ones are from the early 1930's, mostly jazz/big band but there are some Harold Bauer and Paderweski discs in there and some old country and western discs from that time. From the 40's I have Moisewistch playing Rachmaninov 2, Kappel's Khachaturian Concerto, lots of jazz and interestingly many 10 inch vinyl LP's, including the original Art Tatum Capitol recording and Charlie Parker's complete Savoy recordings; I expect those might be worth something.

The oldest records that I actually purchased and still have are Jimi Hendrix' debut album "Are You Experienced", Josef Krips conducting the complete Beethoven Symphonies and Friedrich Tilegant(sp?)and the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra playing the Brandenburg Concerti.

Somewhere back in the 90's my dad purchased a whole bunch of LP's for $0.25 each from the public library, supposedly they were replacing their collection with CD's.  Contains some Earl Wild, Zimmerman playing Mozart, Richter, Agrerich, Keith Jarrett, some recording of Beethoven played on a really small period keyboard, and a lot more stuff I can't remember.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

my husband has a huge record collection, of which i should listen again.  seems i can never find the record player with the advent of cd's.  but, i have to get into the van to listen to the cd's.  anyways, on his lp's he has george szell and the cleveland orchestra playing a few dozen things.  of course, pitt band - of which he bought every recording.  a lot of horn players.  some older singers.  and a few interesting old russian folk and church (liturgy).  some organ music.  i really don't know among all this what is older.  it all looks old to me.

in my own collection - i would say that the pdq bach is the oldest.  followed by 'the fountains of rome' (forget the composer. terrible terrible).  i also have, in alaska, an lp of glen gould playing all the bach preludes and fugues.  that is probably the most precious item nowdays.  one of my piano teachers gave it to me, and probably knew at the time it was going to be an important recording.  i wasn't sure i was staying in california - so i left it in alaska.  now, i want it back.  unfortunately, every time i return - i forget to bring it back.  don't want to mail it in case it cracks.
