Piazzolla's Oblivion
on: October 04, 2006, 03:26:34 PM
Hi,

I recently attended a concert in Singapore featuring 4 hands piano works played by Albert Tiu and Thomas Hecht. Anybody on this forum happen to be there too?

I believed they played Astor Piazzolla's Oblivion as an encore. Just wondering whether there is a score for 1 piano 4 hands on this piece, or whether it is an arrangement written by Albert Tiu? Any ideas?

Thanks.

Regards,

Zhiliang

Although I couldn't have a chance to attend the concert, I too am interesting to know if there are any good transcriptions of Piazzolla's tangos for 1 piano 4 hands. Any pointers? Thanks!

Hi, are you from Singapore too? I searched around and the only score i can find of Piazzolla's Oblivion is one for piano and Clarinet in B flat. I managed to find the solo piano score for some of his other tangos like Libertango, Meditango, Violenttango, Tango Rhapsody  and so on. Any Piazzolla's fans here too? Care to recommend any good recordings of his pieces?

Regards,

Zhiliang

Hi,

I attended a concert just last week of an Italian pianist Cristiana Pegoraro and she plays a lot  of his works.  She has transcribed many of Piazzola's Tangos for piano.  These are for 2 hands, however.  On her website you can buy the scores for the pieces and also she has a CD of her performing the songs.  She was quite good.  It was so refreshing to hear a live performance of something different from the usual classics and she plays with much passion.  She also does a lot with other Latin American and Cuban dance music as well as the classics.  Hope this helps.

There's an amazing recording of Oblivion by the world's greatest accordionist Frank Marocco.  It's on his CD Apassionata. You can get it on iTunes.

Great song.  It's inspiring.

Hi,

Thank you so much. This has been very helpful. I looked around in her website and also listened to a few samples of her playing. Did she play Piazzolla's Oblivion in her concert? Could you remember how it sounded? It seems really hard to squeeze all the ideas into 2 hands only and i hope it doesnt affect the "feel" of it. They didnt have a sample of her recording on this particular song, so want to find out more before investing in it.

You must have enjoyed it a lot. Wished i was there.

Zhiliang

Yes she did play the Oblivion and both my husband and myself thought it sounded quite good and not lacking in texture.  However, neither one of us had ever heard his music before so we would not be good judges of whether her rendition does justice to the original.  I guess you would have to judge by the samples she does have.  I do not have the recording of it either or I would share it with you.  Perhaps she would email you a sample page of the score?   I hope it works out.
