it must be, yes, it must be

i thought this was a profound musical statement by beethoven.  well, it turns out - just a sort of aside to a person that had to pay up.

https://ringnebula.com/Beet/B_1826.htm  scroll down to woO 196  (works without opus)

it sounds very profound in german.

It comes from a Hippie Site, it's not scholarly and therefore unreliable.

However, it would be quite funny if it was true.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

everything surrounding it is true - including the fact that after one of Karl's suicide attempts (which was illegal in germany at the time) beethoven put him into the regiment - and thus the dedication to his captain stutterheim of the first string quartet.

i don't think this is a 'hippie' site.  i tend to believe that this was a quote of which makes better sense than the simple 'it must be' without any reason for saying it.  beethoven had quite a sense of humor - which made him do things without taking any drugs.  especially in regards to modifying music or quotes or dedications.

i take it you are a professor or something - and don't like the way i research things on the net.  well, i agree.  i am lazy and i don't read german.  so i kind of piece things together as best i can.  people like the story.  and it generally has a flow.  so...

but, where do you think more accurate information is - besides thayer.  or perhaps i should say - the third volume of thayer (which i've not read).  i think i shall sit down with thayer again at leisure.

must find more time to do scholarly research.  i kind of need someone to pay me.  do you know anyone that would?

I read once that in one Country, attempted suicide was punishable by death.

Possibly Japan? Although the only reason I currently have for thinking so is the plot of the Mikado, which partly hinges on the ideal of suicide being a capital offence. Possibly not an entirely reliable source!

elspeth, you should have never mentioned the mikado.  now my overactive imagination has taken over and i see thal and yoonie playing their separate parts.  thal the sailor, yoonie the mikado lady.

I think you're getting your shows mixed up, can't remember a sailor in Mikado... is Thal really your idea of a romantic hero?

oh dear.  maybe i got him mixed up with the whimpy tailor turned high executioner.  i guess the sailor was in madame butterfly.  anyway, yes - i think thal is a sort of romantic character.  i mean, he did dress up as a bunny.

true, i can be very romantic when the situation requires.

I have given out more than my fair share of flowers/choccies in the past.

Just looking for someone to practice on i guess.

what i don't understand is why perfectly decent guys languish over here, and perfectly decent girls languish over there.  i think all we need is a few airplane tickets.  of course, moving a continent is not so easy.

thal is cute in a bunny costume.  that's all.  i could try to turn this into more.  like - hmm.   maybe i should have bought one too, when the kids were at the costume shop.  but, with a bad leg - how much hopping around can one do?  must be why thal is sitting eating candy.

this is all i want.  some candy.  ok.  i just want to sit and eat candy with thal.
