Corigliano - Piano Concerto
on: October 06, 2006, 11:06:06 PM
Hey guys,
Corigliano was mentioned in my theory text book, so I looked him up on Naxos and started listening to the Piano Concerto. It is amazing! Anyone have any info on it or resources about it?

Thanks,
Nolan

no info on it, other than its a great concerto. its about the same quality of his etude fantasy i think, which i also love. too bad corigliano doesnt have much piano music, but what he has is great and unique. barry douglas owns this concerto. im not sure who plays it on naxos, so i cant comment on that one. james tocco does a good job with it also.

Here is the info on the track from Naxos:

Composer(s):
Corigliano, John
Conductor(s):
Harth, Sidney; Smith, Lawrence Leighton
Orchestra(s):
Louisville Orchestra
Artist(s):
Tocco, James

They don't have his Etude on Naxos, so I'll have to look elsewhere for it. I really like the style of this concerto. Are there any similar composers you would recommend?

You'll probably love the Barber Piano Concerto.

I actually listened to the Corigliano concerto at roughly the same time as the Barber, and I think the Corigliano is much better.  I'm not sure what else can be said, other than it's a great piece.

i cant decide which one i like better. i like to hear the barber on some days and i like to hear the corigliano on some days.

btw, would you say that the ginastera concertos are similar to the corigliano? or is it stretching it a bit too far? i dunno. those are the first that came to mind when i thought of the percussive nature of the corigliano.

They all are great pieces, but the Ginastera concertos, I feel, are closer to Bartok than to Corigliano.  Wacky Ginastera second, with its Beethoven thing going. ;D

yeah, on second thought, the ginastera concertos are way more percussive, moreso than bartók. they have more clusters than a bowl of granola (i know, bad pun). the corigliano and barber are a bit more tonal. in retrospect, the barber is the best comparison.

I'd take the Barber over the Corigliano any day. The Corigliano still gets props for being so darn epic and intense though.

Ginastera wrote more than 1 piano concerto.

I love Corigliano's piano concerto, it is very easy to appreciate and I love the polyphony.

Sorry for reviving my old thread, but I just got a hold of the score to this (the Corigliano) and it is amazing! Right now I'm diving into the first movement.

Has anyone here ever played the Corigliano? Any tips on memorizing it all? I'm trying to work in sections. The music is divided nicely into rehearsal numbers, so that is how I'm dividing it. Piano Concertos in general are intimidating to memorize as they are usually so long, but any tips?

You are more than welcome to one if you would care to PM me a mailing address.

I don't really like scanning copyrighted works ;D

If you want, I could scan this for you in early January, maybe the 3rd if you wanted, not to interrupt thal's kindness either.  I think that the Corigliano is insanely difficult.  Actually, it is probably not that bad once you learned the notes, but this piece is no two-weeker like many other concerti.
