Storing Printed Sheet Music
on: October 09, 2006, 03:45:37 PM
I couldn't help but notice that I'm slowly accumulating a rather large collection of printed sheet music.  The only problem I have with doing this, is that having 50 pages of printed music just sitting next to my piano isn't working too well, and having to carry 15 pages to my paino lessons every week isn't working so well either.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to store this sheet music in an organized fasion?

1) filing cabinet...alphabetically store the music

or

2) 3 ring binder

depends on the format of the music(copies? originals? large/small??)

It's just printed music of the internet, so that's 8.5x11 paper with music on one side.  I suppose a filing cabinet would work.  Thanks

 :P I might be.

The problem I have carrying them loose, is that I often lose pages or they somehow manage to work themselves to the bottom of my bag, crumpling them.  I've stuck them in a folder, and this seems to work much better.  They can't get crumpled and it's infinitely more organized.

Paste them in a notebook.

Hey there..
Well I keep the pieces I currently need in a clear folder to be brought along during lessons (at least they don't get crumpled). As for the rest, I keep them in clear folders (sorted according to composers) or in A4-envelopes (again according to composers). It would help a lot if you have some sort of content page for each folder (especially if you have many folders for a particular composer). That'd help cut down the time taken to search for your music since you don't have to flip through every pocket in that folder.

For such scores I have bigger 3 rings folder and  lots of plastic ,transparent foils into what I
put 2 pages ,printed sides out and blank sides in,finally can go through it like through the book(avoiding blnks in that way).
The only what I miss is to write over the page but if really you want to write, you take it out.
Also, from time to time, easily can change the order of filing into folder.

I have had to put my music books in the loft, cause my mummy says they are all over the place.

I never put my music books in my backpack without first putting them inside a protective plastic folder.  Otherwise they do get dogeared, crumpled or squished.

pffft printed sheet music is no fun unless you have to go through it all and match the pieces back up after your stack of 50+ sheets lying on the piano scatters when you hit a SSSZZZZZZZZFFFFFFFFFFFFF chord.

;D

Those transparent plastic sleeves that you put in a binder are the best way to organize, methinks.
[lau] 10:01 pm: like in 10/4 i think those little slurs everywhere are pointless for the music, but I understand if it was for improving technique

If its low quality music like from sheetmusicarchive just bind them with those black plastic rings. I printed litteraly hundreds of pages on my former school (wasted 1 laser cartrage  :o) and now have a nice organized library.
