Best College in United States for Pianist?
on: October 10, 2006, 04:00:54 AM
Hi!,

First post here, I was recently approached by an old friend about the very question in the subject of this post.  I'm very unfamilar with the reputations of each college, if anyone could help me in this area I would be very thankful.

Since you used the word "college" and I think you want a well-rounded education in addition to musical studies, you might consider Oberlin College in Ohio.

Don't forget New England Conservatory. They have eminent piano professors like Russell Sherman and his wife Wha Kyung Byun.
By the way, Colburn School is also good. It provides full scholarship to every accepted student. John Perry is now teaching there. ;)

Oberlin Conservatory. The campus has the largest collection of Steinways outside of the Steinway factory! Pianos in every dorm, all well-maintained, and it's so quiet there. A great place to study. New York city is cramped, full of distractions and noise.

Actually I have no idea. I studied economics there (also a good program!) It's a beautiful campus, although it always feels kind of lonely. There were some tremendous pianists there, though!

try west chester university for a scholarship based on talent from any country.  if you are one of the better students where you currently are - check it out.  we had a student from siberia that was given a chance to study here.  and, they are very pro-international student.

funding behind a college is important, too.  if you know a college has recently been given a large donation (will, estate) then lots of things can happen that can't otherwise.  west chester (in pennsylvania) has a lot of old dead people.  they donate everything to the college before they die.  thus, a brand new music building with all new steinways!  can you believe it.  (ps - i think a lot of people still living donate time and money to west chester as  well)

all the faculty seems julliard trained.  you can't beat it for quaintness and yet - it is becoming modern with the new building.  they took a long time building it just right!  and of course, putting pianos in.  it should be open now.  i haven't seen it completed - but i think there's a pic on the web site.  i saw it being built.  www.wcupa.edu/CVPA/som/future.html

another thing is that the variety and interest of music classes are wide.  you have summer seminars.  you have specialists for different areas of music.  and, if you like samuel barber - his home is right nearby!  a good music library!  many new things to see and do.  and easy trips to NYC - yet you don't have to live in the congestion or pay such high fees for parking, etc.  (although i learned that 15 minute parking is 15 minutes at west chester - and no more).

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
