Help with left hand fingering
on: October 10, 2006, 02:12:20 PM
Hello, all! I've been teaching myself piano for a while now, but the way I taught myself to do left hand fingering is very...misguided now that I'm doing more advanced piano pieces. In other words, I use both hands for things that are only in the bass clef. I need to get myself off that, but I can't figure out what fingering I'm actually supposed to do most of the time. And the sheet music I use to learn doesn't have fingering on it for the most part.

So I have an excerpt from a piece. If anyone could help me with the fingering, I'd be eternally grateful!!

(Like right now, I'd do 5-3-1 on the left then 1-3 on my right hand for the bass, which is totally wrong.)

Secondary question, for something like the below, do I just have to jump around with my left hand a lot to get from the really low notes to the chords?

Thank you so much!

Hi siraaji

Usually, when you have a pattern like the first left hand one a solution with:

5 3 2 1 2 3 5 etc

with the index finger over the thumb is best.

Your second problem, yes you have to jump a bit with the left, in order to play the note values as written, although when you cant reach the lowest ones its ok to help with the right hand.

isn't the fingering for the first position of the Am  5 4 2 1 more natural?

in this case: 5 4 2 1 2 1 2 4

I do it like stagefright, myself.

Yes, the left hand jumps.  Ragtime is very good practice for that.

Thank you! I was thinking it might be that, but it will obviously take practice to be able to do it and not mess up.

And what about the eighth measure, in the first piece?

I don't have access to a piano at the moment, but from the looks of it, I'd do:
1 5 3 2 1 2 3
