Between 6 and 7 minutes. This is an incredible piece.

Thanks thierry. Clearly not many people know this piece?? No 4 is also a pretty amazing sonata with some real technical challenges particularly in the last movement.  Seems a shame people always do 2,3 6&7 even 5 and 8 often get missed off and they are awesome works too.

To complete the list, I'm currently working on number 9. Absolutley no one seems to play it. If you did I'd love to hear about it - for example what tempo you set out in 2nd movement, and if you go above 180 how you handle the quick repeated notes.

Very nice piece of music, all the more incredible knowing how young he was when he composed. Glad some people here know about..

I think it isn't played more because it's a torso; Prokofiev planned to write two or three more movements, making it a full length sonata but sold the first movement to Belaiev who was anxious to start publishing the young composer's works. I've always felt when listening to this piece (and I think it's great) that it's incomplete, that there's still more to happen. My undergrad teacher suggested it for my senior recital so I dutifully spent a week with it, but decided it was a lot of work for something that seemed not finished, and difficult to program to boot. A young pianist friend of mine (eminently suited to play this piece) had the same reaction when one of his past teachers reccomended it to him.

Hmmm, I am preparing a Russian program with a cellist, still sorting out my solos. I'll go give it a go right now....

Still feel the same way. I will enjoy this by listening to others play it.
