parallel tritones in the left hand
on: October 11, 2006, 08:30:19 PM
I'm working on the Poulenc Piano Concerto, and a passage requires parallel diminished fifths and augmented fourths in the left hand. How do you finger these?

I know you might think of this as no help at all, but really they should be fingered however is easiest and most pleasing to yourself. Try out fingerings of your own and see what fits and what doesn't. As they are parallel and between white and black keys (apart from F-B) it doesn't look like you can bounce them out between your thumb and the same finger, so some alternating is needed. This can be either between your fourth and fifth or your thumb and second, or both! Give everything a try and see what works for you. That is how you should finger those.

I guess, you talk about the
fff
trépidant
I would use 1_4 2_5 1_4 2_5 2_5 (again!) 1_4 2_5 1_4 and so on
(trépidant means hectic
)

Just found a much better fingering:
1_4 2_5 1_5 1_5 2_5 1_5 2_5 1_5
(all lower notes with 5th finger - except the Ab)

Chopin Etude Op10/3 has something similar in the middle section for LH. You may want to check that for ideas.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Thank you.
I usually try to come up with fingerings myself, but after trying for about 30 min I gave up on that passage.
