Let's talk about something positive
on: October 12, 2006, 11:14:53 PM
I'm noticing that most every thread on the "anything but piano" board is becoming negative and members are getting into heated debates, which is sometimes fun! I propose this thread to discuss positive things: something positive you witnessed in your community, maybe something good you want to say about another member, etc etc....

I'll start:

Pianistimo:    While sometimes I dont' agree fully with all of your posts, the short time I have been on the forum, I have noticed what a deep commitment you have to what you believe in.   You seem to me like the kind of person that really cares for her family and kids and others.    You also seem very knowledgeable about matters of the bible.

Lagin:   I really respect your values. I can tell by your post how committed you are to maintaning strong moral values in your life.

dear jpianoflorida,

i respect your beliefs as well and enjoy your posts, too!  i am of the same mind about positive experiences.  i just went to one tonight.  a penny auction.  how can kids and parents get so excited that the people can't hear the auctioneer over penny items?  there was so much enthusiasm that it sort of caught on.  after a while - losing all your money meant nothing.

ok.  let me explain.  the middle school had this 'penny auction' where you can buy a envelope full of little cut up pieces of paper that have a number (your personal number) like 058.  then, you go sit down along a train of lunchroom tables that circle around like a train track.  people start passing things by you with a tin can - and you can bid as little or as much of your number as you want on any particular item that passes by you (on a cardboard tray).  basically, some mom just went and bought out target's junk items.  a whole three shelves of 'clearance' items.

back to the idea.  then - when all the items and cans (1 item and 1 can per cardboard tray) come to the end of the table - the auctioneer grabs the can - pulls out a number - and tells the item and the number that won.

so...1/2 way through the thing - i'm straining to hear, like beethoven must have, amid a sort of squirrel rush on things by 6th 7th and 8th graders.  the parents have to dig for more money once in a while to buy more tickets.  the whole thing feeds on itself.

all in all - i don't think any parents left with any cash or change.  but, it was fun while it lasted.

oh.  and i forgot to say that at intermission - the drama club gave a really cute show.  two people sang 'the song goes like this...'  or some such thing (which joked about what key they were singing in, how a song is supposed to go, how a song should end, etc.) - and they had really mature voices for their young ages.  also, we had some tap dancers and a jazzy singer that sang a song about new york.  i'm impressed with the level of enthusiasm at this school.

that sounds great! the little pleasures in life are what count!   Like a student that is so quiet you never know what they are thinking brings in a drawing she made at school for you! those are the moments that matter!

yes!  that is very special.

tonight we also had a song about how many minutes in a year - and the end of the song counted time with love and loving experiences.  i almost cried because sometimes parents get caught up in the time rush.  get to school, get the homework done, do the chores - but each thing has to have love in it .  it's like what glues the mixture all together.  when i saw all of these 6th 7th and 8th graders and their sweet personalities all mixed up together - it was really an eye opening experience.  it makes one remember those days and just appreciate how they see things.  to take things slower and not be overly worried about whatever it is that we worry about.  they probably have enough worries at that age.

my daughter has slowly changed from 6th to 7th grade.  i am now allowed to come to these functions again.  last year - it seemed like she didn't want me following her around.  i'm realizing that secretly they like it.  to give them space - but to sort of know what's going on generally.  i haven't gone so far as to chaperone at dances or anything - but thankfully, they don't have that many yet.

[lau] 10:01 pm: like in 10/4 i think those little slurs everywhere are pointless for the music, but I understand if it was for improving technique

Nature is wonderful, and I love enjoying nature.

You should too! Sunsets are amazing at this time of year, so go out around 6-7pm and bask in all of our Mother's glory.

I agree about nature... there's a big park just up the road from where I live and the trees are just starting to turn, it's gorgeous.

Theatres are wonderful. I've just been involved with reopening one of the ones I work for after a major 18-month closure for a refit, we reopened last weekend with Rigoletto (also fab - you can listen to the recording off the Radio 3 website I think) and it's loads of hard work at the moment but oh, I love my job. There's nothing like putting a show on and standing at the back of the auditorium before it starts feeling the buzz and excitement, or at the end when the curtain comes down and the audience loved the show and cheer their approval and knowing you helped make it happen. I'm so lucky to do what I do, and I appreciate it all the more knowing how many people don't like what they do to earn their living. And, of course, the best Victorian opera house in the north of England is back in business! Hurrah all round!
Go you big red fire engine!

I is going out into the country with my friend and his telescope tonight.

It is amazing to view the immensity and beauty of the universe.

Hope it is not cloudy.

Cloudy or not, the problem with the skies above Gravesend is the light pollution; you should just try the same thing in the Sud-Charente where I was a couple of weeks of more ago, where there is almost no such light pollution and, if you happen to be fortunate in getting a really clear night sky, the plethora of stellar entities that are available for observation by the naked eye est formidable, to say the very least...

excuse me, but do you mean LIGHT pollution or light POLLUTION?  just wondering.  try clairton, pennsylvania for that last one.  the smell of coal is always so beautiful.  cough, cough.

california's high desert is really cool for star gazing, too.  of course, the quiet air is only absconded by howling coyotes - of which one gets right back into the car when they hear them.

alaska is pretty cool star gazing too.  and, northern lights exposure.  fairbanks, especially in mid-winter.

here in pennsylvania (we've been here four years now) the leaves are changing and the geese are gorging themselves and then migrating -although the birds seem confused this year.  they've been going around in circles.  whenever it's hot enough during the day - it makes them want to stay one more day and eat a bit more.

I was referring to LIGHT pollution rather than general pollution - and this was in specific response to your remarks about stargazing, an act with which curry fumes, however intense, would surely find it somewhat hard to interfere - even in le fin des Graves...
