indeed. it is my favorite of the currently recorded 4. the bass clusters and that repeated left hand, imo, replicate a cottom mill perfectly. the monotony before that bluesy section is also a nice contrast. at the end, i love how he created the effect of the cottom mill going out of control. btw, does anyone have any word on rzewski's 5th north american ballade (it makes a long time man feel bad)? im anxious to see/hear it.

Great piece, love it to death.

Anyway the best rec I have heard was from the Richter competition by a very good asian pianist. It had more spark than Hamelin and it was of course a vid(I don't have it).

Anyone heard Yarden's interpretation?

It fits well with her other repertoire, like the Kurtag.

If I were a judge in that competition, I'd give her first prize just for performing the piece.

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
