I disagree. Their is absolutely no biological reason we have organised music. Why would we evolve to enjoy music?
Maybe not in the biological sense you are thinking about. But in that sense neither does our intelligence. We are the only species with the level of intelligence we have. Most species on earth are far more succesful than we are without it. Almost all life on earth has no intelligence at all.
No, evolution doesn't only operate through natural selection. Our brains were almost certainly a product of sexual selection. And so is language, art, music and all things like those. There is no biological reason in the 'survival of the fittest' sense. But our ancestors must have favored partners who were well spoken, had a sense of humor, had the ability to generate creative thought etc.
Sure, intelligence helps with getting food and the like. But our brains require a lot of energy. As you get more intelligent you will also need more food. So the seemingly big advantage isn't that great.
I agree that music changes, but it dosent evolve. New forms of music come about from technology, new techniques, and fads.
New forms of music don't come about just by technology. Human things like culture and fasion can not remain static. These things will just change for the sake of changing itself. Why not call this evolution?
