Four-hand Romantic pieces?
on: October 28, 2006, 04:03:42 PM
I'm an amateur who enjoys playing four-hand music with friends.  We've been taking on the Beethoven symphonies and wonder if you professionals out there could recommend some juicy, big-boned Romantic music for this form?  Originals and transcriptions welcomed!  Thanks for any help you can give me.
Current repertoire:  "Come to Jesus" (in whole-notes)

Dvorak's Slavonic Dances fit the bill pretty nicely, as does a lot of Rachmaninoff. The Dvorak's available as a Dover and the Rach is available from Belwin Mills, both very cheap. Other than that, there's some Rimsky-Korsakov transcribed by the composer for piano 4 hands, and Moussorgsky wrote a piano sonata for 4 hands too, though I don't know how good it is.

Schubert Grand Duo   and  Lebensstürme  are very wild and romantic!!!
If it doesn't work - try something different!

There's the Schumann variations for 2 pianos, horn and cello (maybe 2 of each don't rememebr exactly), but I think you can get away with jsut the piano parts. - that maybe totally wrong, but you can look into it if you're interested.
Jeux d'enfants by Bizet is great fun expecially the last one.  Brahms has written a fair bit - the Hungarian dances are transcribed for 4 hands, the Haydn Variations, Schumann Variations.  He also arranged his String Quartets.
There's Ravel's Rhapsody espagnol - not really romantic but it's a great piece.  There's a 4 hand work by Liszt although i'm not sure what it's called, and there's the rondo by Chopin.
Pretty much all the orchestral repertoire has been transcribed for 4 hands as that was the only way someone could get to know it 100 years ago.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

Schubert has many four hand works. Brahms also has his transcriptions of hungarian dances for four hands. I personally find the rach impossible.

Ungodly tricky, but not impossible. A friend and I are playing the Italian Polka and maybe the 6 Pieces op. 11, and we're just high school students.

Got just the one for you.  The Romance from the Rachmaninoff Suite #2 for 2 pianos, 4 hands.  It's a bit of work, and gorgeous.

even though they arent played much, medtner wrote two pieces for 2 pianos, 4 hands: knight errant and russian round dance. both are kinda hard, but very doable. very romantic also. theyre some of my favorite 4 hand pieces.
