Need to Build Repertoire
on: November 02, 2006, 11:17:59 PM
Hi all! Have been absent from bothering everyone in the chat and in forums due to work, moving in boyfriend, getting engaged, and now... gettng sick (ALL within a week or so!).  Anyways, I work at the Holiday Inn and they have a lounge!!! My manager found out I can play piano and said I could play once or twice a week possibly. THIS IS THE CATCH. I'm not a barfly... and I live in southern Georgia (where people consistently ask me if I can play "Fur Elise" when I can play Chopin's Minute Waltz, Nocturne Post Humous, and much more complex pieces (they are not enlightened!)

SO, I've noticed that this is mostly about classical repertoire BUT, I was wondering if anyone could offer up some bar friendly repertoire for a south Georgian lounge... Keep in mind this is a hotel lounge with travelling business men and construction workers, contractors and such.

So far I've thought up these pieces.

1. Billy Joel's "Piano Man" (I have created my own arrangement for.. if I can remember it)
2. Marc Cohen's "Walkin in Memphis" (I own the sheetmusic but still learning.
3. Rascall Flat's "Bless the Broken Road" (Own sheetmusic, still learning)
4. Norah Jones "Don't know Why" (Own sheetmusic, still learning, QUITE jazzy :D )

Other than that I'm completely clueless. I'm sure I could mix some classical in their occasionally....  but classical causes my hands to tense up more than contemporary (Psychological impact of classical music --- must be perfect was drilled into my head.. causes stress on hands).  Jazzy tunes and contemporary welcome! Recognizable tunes though so people can enjoy and know what they're listening to.

No gospel... manager doesn't want revivals nor offended people who aren't spiritual (alcohol + religion = bad).

Hope we can come up with some good ones!!!

There's always "Georgia on My Mind" :)

There is this piece "Misty"
Forget by its who, i could send you the sheets if you want them.
It has lyrics too, so it would make a great lounge song.
