Single butt vs double butt bench
on: November 09, 2006, 04:40:20 AM
 ;D ;D

Okay.  I am still trying to decide on what exactly I should do about benches.

I am wondering if you teachers ever use a duet bench of any kind ?  Do you think it's worth spending the money on it (especially if it were a second bench) ?

Thanks,
m1469

do they make duet benches with adjustable knobs?  i think you should get what fits YOU best - and let your children go home and practice on what is most comfortable to them in their homes.  unless you do a lot of duets.

it's nice to be able - after playing a piece - to let your arms hang down over the sides to relax the arm and hand.  you can't do this with a double bench unless you hang your arms down in front of the bench.  (this is why i used to practice a lot with a chair that had no arms).

i don't really know.  maybe the benches are really nice and once you try a duet bench you never go back to the regular ones again.

Get a double, and then place your bed behind it. When you are feeling tired on the piano, you can just lie backwards with the upper part of your body on the bed. Wha-la, instant mini bed. :D ;D

you really need a name change!   come on....   "ilovemusic", "lifeisgood", "ilikeallkindsofmusic"   hate is such a negative word.     Just remember some of the most popular pop music may be based on classical music.......open your mind to explore!

I sit beside my students almost every lesson for something - and it's not just for duets.  I'd definitely go the 'double butt' bench.  (I also have a stool beside the piano for me to sit) but I do a lot of - you play the right hand and I'll play the left hand -vice versa ... also improvising games at the piano, and note reading exercises I do a lot sitting beside the student, also for demonstrating small passages etc.    And for the real little beginners it's imperative to sit beside them.   (and no ... it's not adjustable - so I adjust the student - cushions, footstools etc).

My vote's definitely for two bums!

I would most definitely go with the double bun bench, m1469.  When I got my piano I invested in a nice, big double bench.  I also sit down next to my students constantly, and of course it is also necessary for duets.  It's worth every penny.

My teacher sits on a folding chair at the end of the bench.  This is far from ideal.  For one thing, I have to skew the music very much to the right on the music rack so she can see it, which means I am always looking right when I play.

My teacher uses a studio -- one of about six -- at a large music store.  The piano and setting are thus supplied by the store.  It is possible she cannot control the choice of a bench.

Another problem -- when she wishes to hit a few notes to illustrate something, it is very difficult for her -- she has to stand up and reach over.

-----------------

Totally different spin on the question -- what if both the teacher AND the student are extremely obese?  Say -- 300 lb each?  I suppose this could happen.

Two issues --

1) Could both their fannies fit on the bench?

2) Is the bench warranted to hold 600 lbs?  Perhaps if both were hitting fortissimo chords at the same time, a catastrophe could occur.

This is my wisdom on the topic  . . . . .
