Most original "tastefull" pianist out there today.
on: November 12, 2006, 05:27:02 PM
More and more pianists seems to love to play  technically impressive, but only very few has got a style all of their own.

How many of todayīs pianists have got a style all of their own?

Pogorelich and sometimes Volodos are the only ones not yet 50 that comes to my mind right now.

Pletnev, Sokolov, especially the latter.

His Kapustin CD is breathtaking (in the sense of virtuosity and tastefulness as well )

He changes his tone a lot  depending on what he plays.

Sometimes he sound like a player piano and sometimes with a great tone.

Itīs hard to imagine that itīs the same pianist if you compare his best recordings with his worst.

Hamelin?  Tasteful?  Virtuosic, yes, and able to play anything impossibly difficult and relatively obscure, which instantly eliminates almost all competition -- yes, all of that is true.  But an artist in the ranks of Argerich and Hatto?  I think not.  Where is the standard repertoire that he has recorded to stand against the giants of the past?

And his recording legacy?  Please, can't we all admit that most of his recordings capture a sound/tone that is not all that distinctive or arresting?  Is it Hyperion's fault?  It very may well be.  I've never heard him live, so please excuse my judgments based on his recordings.

Just compare his recorded sound and attention to detail that can be found in the recordings of Hatto and Argerich.  Is there really any comparison?  Have you REALLY heard Joyce Hatto in comparable literature?  She makes him sound like a beginner.
Current repertoire:  "Come to Jesus" (in whole-notes)

actually, there are recordings of hamelin doing standard repertoire, but some is non-commercial and you just have to look for it. some is very good, and some is not so good, depending on the piece. there was another thread that listed a few pieces he has played and recorded of the standard rep. and who made this rule that you need a ton of standard rep to be considered tasteful? often times, its not the composer's fault for being obscure or less played. ive heard many obscure things that are better than some standard rep pieces. and hamelin is passionate, but in a more conservative way. i think that hamelin whoops argerich in many aspects. argerich is a machine. she shows absolutely no shred of emotion while playing, whereas hamelin does. i cant comment on hatto, for her recordings are very hard to find here in the states, and i only have her chopin ballades and rondos disk. ive heard many good things about her, so i will be open-minded. and man, from what ive read, her repertoire and recording output were huge.

Sometimes true but hardly always.

Argerich would propabably be nowhere near as famous if she was an uggly man.

Some of her recordings are very overrated.

Stephen Hough's interpretations of standard rep are original without being freaky for the sake of it and his own compositions are impressive. Kissin is growing on me, as well as being technically great he offers something unique, a combination of modernity and old-fashioned Russian passion. Also Hamelin, what a pianist, what a nice guy as well.

Hi:

I have finally gotten around to listening to some of Angela Hewitt's Bach recordings.  I would
plainly add her to the category of original/tasteful pianists.  I've been listening to quite a bit of Bach lately, including recordings by Schiff, Perahia, Richter, Turek, Fischer, Gould, Serkin among others, and although not all of her recordings are my favorites, I  find her performances to be quite distinctive and interesting.

Best,

Gary K.
