peer to peer lending is what this is about.  of course, unsecured loans can be risky - but this site links people seeking modest sums with other people who bid on interest rates they place on money they're willing to lend.  for a fee, the site consolidates bids, links them to loans and moves monthly payments (skipping the middle man). 

don't know why i wrote this other than i just read it in the reader's digest and thought it was interesting.
