Most popular competition peices
on: November 14, 2006, 04:17:14 PM
I was going through the repertoire lists of random competition participants of random competitions, and it was pretty obvious what peices are popular for pianists trying to display their technique and whatnot.  I found that these peices are most popular:

Showy/Finales:
-Balakirev: Islamey
-Ravel: Gaspard de la Nuit
-Prokofiev: Sonatas 6, 7, & 8
-Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
-Schumann: Symphonic Etudes

For Requirements:
-Beethoven/Haydn/Mozart Sonatas
-Chopin/Liszt: Etudes
-Bach: Well Tempered Klavier

Concertos:
-Rachmaninoff: Concertos nos. 2/3
-Prokofiev: Concertos nos. 2/3
-Beethoven: Concertos nos. 3, 4, & 5
-Brahms: Concerto no.2
-Chopin: Concerto no.2

Any other peices that you think are really popular or more likely to be chosen for a competition?

I agree with the above and would add the Chopin Ballades and Scherzi.

For lower-tier perfomers and high school competitions, I remember everyone and their brother seemed to perform:
Liszt Liebestraum
FI
Ravel Sonatine
Schumann Arabesque
Mendelssohn G minor concerto
Chopin 10/12
Beethoven's Rondo a Capriccio
Un Sospiro
Gershwin prelude No1

Because there's nothing else in the repertoire, apparently.....  ::)

haha. In a high school competition Chopin 10/12 was played twice and back to back. The later one was obviously better and later won it.
