I play too fast...curbing the habit
on: November 15, 2006, 09:40:24 AM
I am trying to curb the habit of playing music too fast...with no emotional appreciation ( I specialize in Chopin, Liszt and my own improv so you can see a bit of romanticisim here).

I've seen way too many pieces which could have been executed slower been played too fast, which diminishes musicality.  Just watch this video and you'll see:

I felt it when I was playing, but listening to it now, and NOT watching it, there's hardly any room for emotion, it's quite a rushed performance.

I need to calm down on the keys, but I can't help it, i'm a madman when it comes to the piano, it's a love-hate relationship I have, sometimes the piano will do me well, and I acknowledge that, and sometimes I will get angry with the black and whites, and it will realize that it IS my pregnant dog.

There is some coincidence here with the fact that I love the piano however treat it as an object, sometimes obtrusive mostly passive.  Mostly open to appreciation in the matter.

I need to slow down the emotional aspect of the piano.

'Too Fast' should not be in your vocabulary.

There's always the metronome,   :P then you can literally hear how, if you start out
slowly, you speed up. When playing, it's easy to feel that speed=passion.
It's a matter of changing the unconscious equation. Easier said than done though   :)

Some play the pieces as fast, even faster, with all the passion. What you need is not speeding down, it's getting control over yourself, so you can freely express yourself in any fast passage.

I heard the passion in your music, which was remarkable from an electronic piano.  And I didn't think it was too fast.

You know, Tyler, several thoughtful people have taken the trouble the listen to your YouTube performance and to give you constructive criticism.  Hello?  Are you out there?  Where is your thanks?
Current repertoire:  "Come to Jesus" (in whole-notes)

I thought your playing was not too fast Tyler. I thought it was just fast enough. Clarity was good, and I thought it was musically played. Once you can get out of the way of the notes, with good technical ability, most of the time the music speaks for itself in my opinion. People often try to make too much of the notes. I wondered why you thought you play too fast. If inaccuracies set in then yes, that would be too fast. But on a piece that is supposed to be fast, why not play it fast. You surely don't want to "slober" over the notes as some do. Ever hear of an old legend name Walter Klein? I liked his playing alot, and my teacher at the time said he could not stand his playing. It was because of the lack of slober, emoting on every note. Keep up the great playing!

Well thanks guys I appreciate it.  I have been out of lessons since senior year in high school, and i'm 22 so that's like what...4 years?  So my technique has defenitely declined but as long as I keep playing the songs over and over they stick with me.  I may forget the fingering, but i'll never forget the order of the notes.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31. Piano Street’s members are invited to watch the livestream. Read more
